Treatment through oil therapies

A Kerala-based ayurveda pharmacy unit with its head office at Thiruvananthapuram, operating from Sector 15, here, is offering treatment through medicated oil therapies for ailments like arthritis, backache, joint pain, diabetes, blood pressure and paralysis, among others.

The unit also offers rejuvenation packages to help one overcome stress and has a list of 50 patent medicines. The treatment is carried out by qualified doctors and staff, all the way from Kerala.

Incinerator to be set up near Kharar

Anultra-modern incinerator for the disposal of hospital waste from the town would be set up in Balyali village in Kharar block. The Chief Administrator of the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority(PUDA), Mr K.B.S. Sidhu, today said the authority was holding discussion with the Ranbaxy Group — setting up Fortis Healthcare hospital in Sector 62 here — to set up the incinerator in an area of 1.25 acre in the village.

The site in Balyali village had been selected by a multi-disciplinary team, comprising officials from PUDA, Town and Country Planning, Rural Development Department, Panchayat Department, Punjab Pollution Control Board, Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Ropar, district administration and the village panchayat. The site was away from village abadi, he said.

He said the management of the upcoming healthcare institute was being persuaded to instal an incinerator double of the hospital waste disposal from the institute so that the facility could be used later to treat the hospital waste from other nursing homes and clinics in the town.

Panchkarma centre for Mohali

The region will soon have the first dedicated panchkarma centre in SAS Nagar. Disclosing this, here today, Mr Sanjay Popli, Director, Ayurveda, Punjab, said the centre will be inaugurated sometime next week.

According to Mr Popli, panchkarma, a cleansing process of the body with five types of ayurvedic treatment can effectively take care of modern health problems like hypertension, variations in blood pressure, arthritis and obesity. Panchkarma has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as a method proven to rejuvenate the body scientifically besides increasing longevity, said Mr Popli.

With panchkarma, the waste products, including poisons and toxins which accumulate in the body are expelled from the body, he said.

City shuttlers corner glory

Chandigarh-based shuttlers came out with good performance in the recent North Zone Prize Money Badminton Tournament which concluded last week at Jammu. In this meet, they bagged six titles of the total eight thus leaving behind the players from neighbouring states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi who had to satisfy with two titles only.

The players who achieved the distinction at the meet included Vivek Sharma, Varun, Mala Gaba and Isha Sharma. All these players practise at the Panjab University coaching centre under the guidance of Surinder Mahajan, senior coach of the Sports Authority of India.

Chandigarh has gradually become a powerful force in north India as last year its boys won the Narang Cup in inter-state meet and women remained runners-up in the Chadha Cup where top teams of Punjab and Delhi were also in the fray. Mahajan said another victory which brought laurels to the centre was the winning of the All-India Inter-Varsity Badminton title in women category in December last after a gap of nearly two decades. Here also women shuttlers were trainees of the PU centre. The boys team also cornered glory by reaching in the semi-finals.

A visit to the centre today evening showed quite a good number of budding shuttlers practising hard in the scorching heat and humid conditions in the gymnasium hall. Mahajan said from May 20 , a national camp for under-13 and under-16 boys and girls by the Badminton Association of India would be held. This would be held at the PU Gymnasium hall and players would get free lodging and boarding facilities to be supervised by the SAI regional centre.

Mala Gaba, who won three titles in the Jammu meet, said the training provided at the centre was comparable very good. Vivek Sharma, winner of two titles at the tournament, said, “The centre has good environment which helps in giving the best performance. Isha Sharma, who was runner-up at the meet said had she not joined this centre, achievement of this level could not have been possible for her.

The results of the various competitions at Jammu are:

Umpire appointed
Mr Gursharan Singh, a Sangrur-based senior badminton coach of the Punjab Sports Department, has done it. Yes, he has been nominated as one of the umpires for the World Badminton Championships to be held at Seville (Spain) from May 28 to June 10.

This rare honour has been conveyed to Gursharan Singh by Mr Tostern Berg, Chairman, Court Officials Committee of the International Badminton Federation.

Thirtyseven umpires from all over the world will converge on Seville for the major international event.

This is not the first time that Gursharan Singh has been nominated for supervising international matches. His earlier assignments as umpire include in the Thomas Cup, the Uber Cup, the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games and the Grand Prix finals.

95 challans issued for encroachment

The enforcement staff of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh , today issued 95 challans to rehri and phari vendors and other shopkeepers encroaching upon public corridors and MC land in Mani Majra, and a few northern and southern sectors. Besides this, the Estate Office staff impounded 19 cycle- rickshaws for plying on the city roads without licences and removed 16 banners from different parts of the city.

As part of the MC drive, nearly 40 challans were issued in southern sectors of Sectors 33, 34, 35, 36, 43, 44, 49 and 50, particularly of the rehriwalas and the shopkeepers who had extended their wares upto the public corridors and parking areas in the market. While 29 challans were issued in Mani Majra, 26 were issued in the northern sectors of Sectors 4, 7, 9, 11, 15, 16, 17 and 18 , including the vendors outside Sukhna Lake, the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Rock garden. The Estate Office Staff impounded 19 rickshaws plying without licencesfrom the roadsides and other parking areas in the city. Sixteen banners adorning different parts of the city and roads were also removed. An illegal kiosk on Maloya road was also demolished.

MC panel meeting on May 16

The Finance and Contract Committee (F and CC) of the Municipal Corporation scheduled to meet on May 16 will take up vital issues, including the provision of security guards at various water works; auction of parking sites adjoining cinema halls at reduced prices; fixing the rate to be charged from the watermelon vendors; besides estimates for various developmental works in the city.

The committee is scheduled to take up as many as 28 agenda items including 19 previous agenda items. The new items in the supplementary agenda of the meeting include providing security guards at various water works of MCC in Sectors 12, 26, 32, 37 and 39; estimate of Rs 13.90 lakh for conversion of open drain into storm water drainage at Pipliwala town, Mani Majra; estimate of Rs 8.14 lakh for providing storm water drain and letter box type road gullies on water works road and police staff houses near Sector 26 police station; RCE for providing parking lights through underground cable in newly constructed SCO Sector 9-C near CITCO petrol pump; functioning of Sector 8 community centre.

The other items on agenda are auction of various parking sites adjoining Piccadily, Neelam, Batra, KC and Nirman cinemas at reduced prices; construction of additional parking, widening of road and carpeting of roads behind showroom No 1 to 31, Sector 26 at a revised cost of Rs 11.28 lakh and RCE of Rs 3.38 lakh for providing chequered tiles pavement in the market of rehabilitation colony, Karsan, Phase-II.

In addition to this, the members will also take up the rates to be charged from the watermelon sellers, since they have been demanding that the rates be lowered from Rs 500 per day to Rs 100 per day now that permission has been given to them to sell the fruit on the V-4 and V-5 roads and not on V-3 roads. Provision of streetlights in Sector 17, review of rates to be charged for setting up stalls in various markets of the city, estimates for carpetting the V-6 roads in Sector 28 and Industrial Area, provision of storm water drainage in Maloya will also be taken up.

The meeting scheduled for May 11 was earlier postponed since the Mayor, Mr Raj Kumar Goyal had to go to Delhi to attend to some urgent matter.

Website launched

The official website of the Department of Information Technology, Chandigarh Administration, was inaugurated by Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob, (retd.), UT Administrator, at the U.T. Secretariat, in Sector 9, here today.

Speaking on the occasion, the Administrator said Chandigarh had achieved remarkable success in the IT sector in the past one year. Software exports had gone up from Rs 14 crore in 1999-2000 to Rs 30 crore in 2000-2001. The Administration has earmarked a site for an IT park to be set up in Kishangarh to provide state-of-the-art facilities to IT companies for setting up their development centres here.

He added that e-governance projects had been implemented in the major public dealing departments of the Administration. Application forms and procedures were now available on the official website of the Administration http://chandigarh.nic.in for downloading by the public. The three main buildings of the Administration — the UT Secretariat, the Estate Office and the Municipal Corporation building — were being linked in a wide area network (WAN). Information kiosks and information facilitation counters (IFC) were being set up throughout the city. The IFC in the Central State Library, Sector 17, would be operational by the end of this month.

The website of the Department of IT (http://chdit.nic.in) contained information which was highly useful to residents of Chandigarh and IT companies. The main features of the website included a section on the IT policy, the IT park, the wired city project and e-governance. Links to other sites of the Administration and key information like the telephone directory of the Administration and application forms which were used by the public in interacting with various departments were also available on the new website.
