Unhygienic food items destroyed

The health wing of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) today claimed to have seized and destroyed over 10,715 kg of food articles which were kept for sale under insanitary and unhygienic conditions and were exposed to dust and flies. This was done as part of the raids conducted against the vendors.

According to figures made available, health personnel confiscated and destroyed 9,380 kg of ice and ice candies, 740 kg of cut fruits and vegetables and 110 kg of meat and meat products since they were found exposed to dust and flies. Besides destroying 80 bottles of unpotable soda water, unhygienic sweets and other eatables weighing 260 kg and 225 kg of sugarcane juice were also seized by the civic personnel.

Summer golf camp for kids

Keeping in view the growing interest among children to learn golf, the Hero Honda CGA Golf Academy will conduct a coaching programme for children up to 18 years of age at the CGA Golf Driving Range, near Kishangarh village, Sector 6, Chandigarh from May 22 to June 17.

The Golf Academy is equipped with the most modern and scientific teaching aids, including video cameras, swing trainers, swing analyser and audio-visual golf library.

Children will be imparted coaching to improve their golfing skills in driving, putting, short game and golf mannerism. Physical training will be integral part of the training schedule. The trainees will be divided into suitable batches considering their age and playing ability.

Registration will commence on May 15. The last date for submitting the registration form is May 19.

SAS Nagar win

SAS Nagar beat Chandigarh by 31 runs to enter the semi-finals of the Bir Dasondhi Ram Memorial Cricket Tournament for boys under the age of 16. The match was played on the Atma Ram Kumar Sabha (ARKS) School grounds here today.

Brief scores: SAS Nagar — 146 for 6 (Nitin 53, Ravi Kumar 34 n.o, Vivek 23, Pritpal Singh 2 for 26); Chandigarh — 115 all out (Karanvir 24, S. Ali 27, Sunny Vishal 15, Vivek Walia 4 for 20, Rishab Thakur 2 for 25).

Blue get hockey title

The Centre of Excellence (blue) beat the Centre of Excellence (orange) 1-0 to win the Patiala District Hot Weather Hockey Tournament on the local polo grounds today.

Minutes into the second half, right out Mohammad Zahid gave a defence-splitting pass to the centre forward Parveen Kumar, who converted it into the only goal of the match. Towards the end of the match, the Centre of Excellence (orange) tried hard to equalise, but the rival goalkeeper stopped all their moves.

Mr Manmohan Singh Bajaj, Chairman of the Improvement Trust, distributed the prizes.

Sunil for national volleyball team

Sunil Kumar, a product of Shivalik Volleyball Academy established at Shivalik Public school, Chandigarh has been selected to represent the Indian Junior Volleyball team, which left yesterday for Islamabad (Pakistan) to take part in the Asian Under 19 qualification volleyball tournament being held there. In this meet, eight teams are reportedly participating and two top teams from the above meet will then take part in the World Volleyball championships to be held at Poland in September this year.

Sunil had already played in the Asian Youth Volleyball championship held at Iran in March last. Dr D.S. Bedi, Director Principal of the school, said Sunil was the only player from the entire North Zone who had figured in the Indian team for the said championships.

Sodhi is hockey coach

Joint secretary of the Chandigarh Hockey Association N.S. Sodhi employed with the State Bank of India has been appointed coach for the Indian camp in preparation for the under-18 team for the Asian (under-18) Hockey Tournament to be held at Ipoh (Malaysia) from June 1 to 10. According to Mr Y.P. Vohra, secretary, CHA, the camp will be held on May 11.

Basketball trials

Trials to select the junior Patiala district basketball team will be held at 5 pm on the polo grounds here on May 12, according to Mr G.S Biru, Secretary of the Patiala District Basketball Association (PDBA).

The selected players will take part in the 52nd Punjab State Basketball Championships at Sangrur from May 17 to 20.

Summer league results

DAV Coaching centre, Sector 8, Chandigarh Sports Club and ISTC XI have topped their respective pools with a maximum of eight points each at the end of the point position in the Vth UT Summer league cricket tournament being played here.

UT Cricket Association, in a press release, stated that other teams who have topped in their respective pools are, Industrial Cricket Club, Godrej CC, FCI XI, Gallant CC, Pace XI, Satluj CC and BBMB XI. The matches will begin from May 13.
