While acute cases of gastroenteritis are being admitted to the hospital, others are being discharged after treatment. During the past one week alone, as many 39 cases of gastroenteritis were reported in Medical College Hospital here. The Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr Shashi Mahajan, said out of this seven were still admitted in the hospital. She said the situation was not alarming as all these were scattered cases, coming from different parts of the district. The situation in the Kangra area was worst, as about 10 gastroenteritis cases were being reported in the Civil Hospital, Kangra, daily. According to hospital sources, during the past 10 days the number of gastro patients, who had to be admitted to the hospital was 13. There was an outbreak of gastroenteritis in Jated village, near Daulatpur in the Kangra subdivision last month. According to Dr S.N. Sharma, acting Chief Medical Officer, 60 cases of gastroenteritis were reported in the village on the very first day. A medical team was rushed to the village immediately, to control the situation. Dr Sharma, said sporadic cases of gastroenteritis being reported in the hospital during summers was a seasonal trend. He said being a water-borne disease, it was mainly due to consumption of contaminated water, that people were falling sick. “On our part we are distributing chlorine tablets to people, but cleaning up of the traditional water sources and piped water is the job of the IPH Department,” he added. With acute drinking water shortage in certain villages, people are drawing water from traditional sources like “bowris”, where the water is contaminated. People, however, complain of contaminated water supplied by the IPH Department. Residents of Dharamsala town too complain of this problem. Even at Civil Hospital, Dehra, two to three cases of gastroenteritis are being admitted practically every day. However, the number of out-door patients, is much higher. |
