Bhabhat to be part of Zirakpur civic body?
Our Correspondent

Zirakpur, May 4
After a long wait, it seems that the dream of Bhabhat village residents, to be a part of the Zirakpur Nagar Panchayat, has started turning into reality as the Punjab government has proposed to issue a notification to include the village within the civic body’s limits.

The proposed notification states that the Governor was willing to include Bhabhat village, which presently falls in the jurisdiction of Mohali tehsil of Ropar district, within the Zirakpur Nagar Panchayat limits.

Keeping in view the density of population, the revenue generation for local administration, the percentage of employment in non-agricultural activities, the economic importance and overall development of the area in a planned manner, the government had planned to include the village within the limits of the civic body.

The proposal has also described the boundaries of the village to be merged with the seven other villages constituting the Nagar Panchayat. The government has also sought objections, if any from the inhabitants and effected parties in writing, favouring the Principal Secretary to the Punjab Government, Department of Local Government, within a period of 30 days from the publication of notification.

It may be recalled that the Bhabhat panchayat had been excluded from the Zirakpur Nagar Panchayat when the civic body was formed in 1999. Since then it had been seeking mergence with seven other villages, Zirakpur, Lohgarh, Himmatgarh, Bishanpura, Bishangarh, Bartana and Dhakauli, to form the civic body.

The Bhabhat panchayat had filed a writ petition in Punjab and Haryana High Court saying that the village had a population of over 10,000 and shared major facilities with other villages which were merged to constitute the Nagar Panchayat.

Later, the notification for the constitution of the Nagar Panchayat was quashed by the High Court.

The Punjab government then re-issued a notification for the constitution of the civic body in June last year and the civic body started functioning again.
