Protests against custodial death

Tension prevailed in the city today as an irate mob, agitating against last evening’s custodial death of an aged farm labourer, gheraoed the Haibowal police station since early morning and also forcibly shut down shops in the area.

Fourth case in two weeks

HE custodial death of farm labourer Karnail Singh allegedly in Haibowal police station is the fourth incident of police high-handedness in the district during the past two weeks. Six policemen, including an SHO, have been placed under suspension, while two lives were lost in the incidents.

The ivory tower of desires
Like the girl next door, Sukhwinder Amrit is composing ghazals and nazms in an inconspicuous manner. ‘Kanian’ (2000) is her latest collection of poems. Earlier her two collections of ghazals — ‘Suraj di Dehleez’ (1997) and ‘Chiragan di Daar’ (1999) — had received much acclaim in the literary circles. Generally a good writer of ghazals (ghazalgo) is not expected to be a good writer of poems (nazmgo) also but she has done well in both the genres.

The only wide road in the vicinity of Chowk Ghanta Ghar which connects the GT Road at Mata Rani Chowk with Deepak Cinema road has been reduced to an alley, thanks to haphazard roadside parking of cars and scooters.

Yarn industry wants cut in sales tax

The yarn trade and industry has pleaded for reduction of sales tax on yarn in order to bring about uniformity with other neighbouring states and to effectively check the large-scale evasion of tax, mainly because of higher rates of taxation, which make the goods produced by local manufacturers uncompetitive.

PAU workshop on rice cultivation

To educate the farmers about the latest paddy transplanting technologies, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will organise a workshop-cum-field day on mechanical paddy transplanting systems researched and recommended by the varsity at its farms on May 10.

Record wheat procurement in Ludhiana likely

In spite of rains and bad weather during the start of this procurement season, the district had crossed the mark of last year’s procurement by purchasing 5,79,450 metric tonnes of wheat till yesterday against the last year’s purchase of 5,78,530 metric tonnes of wheat by this date, thus recording an increase of 1000 metric tonnes.

Students of the College of Agriculture (COA), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), boycotted their classes for the second day here today affecting the normal working of the COA. The various departments of the college wore a deserted look.

Forum penalises PUDA
Ludhiana, May 3
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) to refund Rs 22, 500 alongwith interest at the rate of 12 per cent from April 1, 1999 till the actual payment to Dr Satish Nauhria, a resident of Jamalpur colony.

After finishing the taxing duty of invigilation of college examinations, she rushes to shoot for a Punjabi serial ‘Apni Mitti’ being shot in Chandigarh, only to come back to resume her college duties as ‘games teacher’ in the local college the next day.

Basketball tourney from today
Ludhiana, May 3
The district sub-junior basketball teams of boys and girls has left for Fazilka this afternoon to participate in the three-day. Punjab State Sub-Junior Championship starting from tomorrow. Mr Teja Singh, Secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, said the matches would be played on knock-out basis and the state team would be selected on the basis of performance of the players in the tournament.
