Raise compensation amount: BKU Sonepat, April 22 In a signed press statement issued here, he said the amount of compensation between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 per acre announced by the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, was inadequate in view of the hike in the price of certified seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and diesel. The decision of the state government about the giving of relief had resulted in widespread resentment among the affected farmers. He also urged the state government to immediately seek more funds from the Centre for giving relief to the affected farmers and waive electricity charges and the amount of loans, abiana etc. Expressing concern over the non-lifting of procured wheat from various mandis and purchasing centres by the official agencies, Mr Khokhar urged the Chief Minister to direct officials of the procurement agencies to buy all wheat stock marketed by the farmers and lift the same to godowns immediately. He said the non-lifting of procured wheat had already created a glut in the mandis and purchasing centres in the district causing inconvenience to the farmers. |

Stop illegal felling of trees: Bhajan Hisar, April 22 Addressing a national seminar on ‘Relevance between environment and religion’ here, he said the green cover in Haryana was decreasing at an alarming rate for the past several years. Though there were effective methods of checking it, yet officials were not taking it seriously, he said. Mr Bhajan Lal said the pollution in the country had reached dangerous levels. Trees could help reduce it considerably but unfortunately awareness about it was lacking. The former Chief Minister called upon public to grow more trees so that the coming generation could lead a healthy life. He said there was no religion which allowed felling of trees on earth. The seminar was organised by the Akhil Bhartiya Guru Jambheshwar Employee’s Welfare Society. Mr Bhajan Lal also released an introductory booklet on the society
compiled by Dr Madan Lal Khichar and Dr Ashok
Godara. Among those who participated in the seminar were Dr L.N. Sharma, Senior Manager (Marketing), KRIBHCO, Dr Sukhpal and Dr T.S. Kathpal, scientists at Haryana Agricultural University, Dr Ram Niwas Yadav, environmentalist, Dr Narsi Ram Bishnoi, president of the Guru Jambheshwar University Teachers Association, Prof J.S. A spokesman of the students said here today that representatives of social and farmer’s organisations would also be invited to the meeting. The future course of action would be decided at the meeting. Settle border row, farmers told Faridabad, April 22 While negotiations at the official level have failed to find any
solution so far, the authorities have warned to attach the land, if the mahapanchayat of the farmers of the affected village do not arrive at any agreement soon. A meeting of the authorities of Faridabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar of the neighbouring Uttar Pradesh has already been held. The meeting had reportedly decided to give 80 per cent of the harvested wheat to farmers of Chandhut village in the district and 20 per cent to UP farmers. Chandhut, which is located in the Khader belt across the Yamuna, has about 400 acres of land which has come under a dispute due to a change in the course of the river. Every year, such a problem arises due to this factor and farmers of villages from both states adjoining the river claim the ownership of the fields and the crop. The dispute has already turned violent on several occasions earlier. While officials agree that no permanent solution is possible due to nature’s involvement in the problem, it is learnt that the old revenue record of the area is also not available. Such type of dispute’s have also arisen in other districts, including Yamunanagar, Panipat, Sonepat and Karnal, where the Yamuna forms a border between the two states. The authorities had set up a panel — Dikshit Committee — several years ago to solve this “annual tangle”, but it could not help much in finding any solution. Tension has mounted in the affected villages because of the situation. |
Tension
over suspension
of workers Rewari, April 22 It is alleged that certain office-bearers of the workers union were mercilessly beaten up and one of them was also tortured throughout the night by the security guards. It is also reported that Mr Rajeev Gupta, Production Manager, Mr Praveen

The police has registered a case on the charges of rioting, assaulting, causing hurt and intimidating the management officials against eight workers while no case has yet been registered against the ‘erring’ management officials. Meanwhile, the management has suspended all the eight workers, most of them office-bearers of the workers union, who were allegedly involved in the skirmishes. Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Fateh Singh Chauhan, president of the union, and other office-bearers of the union strongly condemned the alleged repression let loose on the workers by the management. They demanded the full implementation of the bi-partite agreement of January, 2001, immediate reinstatement of all the suspended workers, abandonment of repressive measures and prosecution of erring management officials. |

Governor’s presence
restricts movement Ambala, April 22 Although the function started at around 11 a.m. no one was allowed to move on these roads by cane and lathi-wielding policemen who were not only harsh to passersby but insulted a few who tried to know the reason behind the restrictions a resident living in the area said. A lensman from a vernacular newspaper had a tiff with a policeman who did not allow him to enter the schoolbuilding despite the fact that the former had requested the latter to let him go inside to cover the function. The residents, including the housewives, said they were not allowed to come out frequently. Policemen were deployed around the school early in the morning. They complained that had it not been a Sunday, they would have been compelled to remain inside till the conclusion of the function. Owner of a dairy adjacent to the auditorium where function was held, stated that he was asked to keep his cattle inside till the function was over. Police personnel in large numbers were deployed in the area since early this morning. They caught sight of morning walkers and made them shift their route. The aged among them complained it was an irony that all democratic values were at stake on the occasion when tributes were to be paid to the leader who fought for rights of Indians.
