Free camp to test osteoporosis

Chandigarh, March 27
A free camp to test osteoporosis was held in Sector 30 by a pharmaceutical company yesterday in which Dr Manuj Chabbra examined more than 100 patients with the help of a bone mineral densitometer.

Osteoporosis is a disease in which the condition of bones is affected due to various reasons, thereby becoming porous and brittle and prone to frequent fractures. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, USA, two out of every three women and one out of every eight men above the age of 50 can suffer from the disease.

According to doctors as many as 61 million Indians suffer from this condition when even a minor physical effort can cause a serious fracture. The condition is particularly common among the post-menopausal women, patients having acute blood pressure or using steroids, antipileptics and renally impaired patients. The disease manifests itself as back pain, general weakness and loss of weight.

People suffering from the disease are advised to avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and soft drinks. Food rich in calcium is also advised. Similarly, about 60 osteoporosis patients got their bone strength checked with an instrument called bone mineral densitometer during a free osteoporosis detention camp organised by a slimming centre here today.

Bathinda men clinch volleyball title

Bathinda surprised Patiala to wrap the volleyball (men’s) title in the Markfed Sports meet, which concluded here this evening. Patiala had yesterday sailed into the finals by virtue of the fine performance of its star player, Hardaljit Singh Bains, who gave a tough fight to Bathinda before bowing down at 15-25, 25-19, 25-6, in a three-game thriller. The match was played today at Volleyball grounds, Sector 46.

Anu Walia of Jalandhar zone claimed both the table tennis and badminton titles in the women section. She outplayed Savitri in table tennis at 21-5, 21-8 while in badminton, she overpowered Sunita Parmar at 11-6, 11-5.

Earlier in volleyball (men’s) semi-final, Patiala came from behind to outscore Jalandhar at 25-22, 20-25, 25-23 while Bathinda outscored head office at 25-5, 25-4 to enter the final.

Carrom meet
An Inter-departmental Carrom Meet for all Central Government Employees based at Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh will be organised from April 17 to 20. This was disclosed by Mr C.S. Bewli Secretary, Central Civil Services Regional Board of Culture and Sports, Chandigarh. Entries close on April 13 with Mr D.S. Aithani at Survey of India, Sector 32-A.

St John’s reigns
St John’s High School, Sector 26 outplayed St Columbia’s school, New Delhi in the under-14 section in all the three matches it played recently at New Delhi.

The brief scores in all the matches were: Ist match: St Columbia:136 all out in 33.4 overs (Sidhant Trehan 37, Varun Pandey 18, Mayank 12, Jasdeep Singh 4 for seven, Arjun Behl 2 for 35); St John’s: 137 runs for six in 25 overs (Inder Pal Singh 60, Anhad Gill 14, Arjun Behl 11 n.o., Rohan Mittal 10).

IInd match: St Columbia: 168 all out in 34.3 overs (Sutanshu 45, Mayank 35, Udit Tandon 18, Varun 13, Prashant 13 n.o., Arjun Talwar 2 for 25). IIIrd match: St Columbia: 50 all out in 13.4 overs (Sutanshu 18, Mayank 14, Varun 10, Anhad Gill 3 for five, Ankit Arora 3 for 11,Varun 2 for one, Arun Behl 2 for 16).

Cricket tourney
Chandigarh Cricket Association affiliated to Haryana Cricket Association will organise the first Tarsem Lal Cash Prize Cricket Tournament from April 6 to 29 here. According to Mr Surinder Singh ‘Baijee’, secretary of the association, this tournament is being organised in the memory of Late Tarsem Lal, founder of Talwar Jewellers and a great sports lover.
