New OPD in PGI, some respite
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh , March 25
The Rs 20-crore new PGI OPD received as many as 15,341 patients in the first week of functioning since March 19. On the first day itself, the new block received around 2,459 patients. The building, which is scheduled to be formally inaugurated by the Union Health Minister, Dr C.P. Thakur on April 4, has come as a welcome respite for a large number of patients who throng the hospital from across the region despite certain problems.

Problems such as transportation from the old OPD to the new block and organised diagnostic facilities are still to be resolved by PGI authorities. Many patients visiting the new block for the first time continue to feel harassed due to lack of transport facilities till the gate opposite Sector 11, which is adjacent to the new OPD Block.

At present, there are only three buses that come up to this gate; two buses between Khuda Alisher and Sector 47 (bus numbers 131 and 3) with a frequency of one hour, which stop at the new OPD gate. Another bus plies from the PGI main gate, opposite the Panjab University to Sector 21, Panchkula, which goes via the new OPD with a frequency of 30 minutes. Meanwhile, the PGI authorities are pursuing the matter with the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) to divert some more buses till the new OPD gate becomes functional.

According to sources, Ultrasound, X-Ray and other diagnostic facilities would start functioning at the new block from this week onwards. This will save the patients from harassment, as at present they have to go to the Nehru Hospital, which houses the old OPD to avail the facilities and is about half-a-kilometre away.

However, certain special tests like CT scans, MRI, endoscope and other minimally invasive procedures, test for heart problems like echocardiography and angiography will continue in the old block, while their dates will be given in the new building. The OPDs of radiotherapy and dental services will also not shift to the new block.

Moreover, the building also does not have adequate space for Central Registration Department (CRD) despite having 22 registration points. Provision for reception is also not adequate to meet the basic requirements. Some also feel that in a day care centre, there was no need for five operation theatres and the space could have been better utilised.

While there seems to be no solution for these problems at the time, the fact remains that with its spacious, hygienic and congenial environment, the new block is proving to be a welcome relief from overcrowding, for both the patients as well as the doctors.
