SAI coach returns to city

Chandigarh, March 19
Surinder Mahajan, of the SAI, senior badminton coach who recently went as coach of the Indian junior badminton team for the Dutch Open and German Open, has returned here.

Five boys and two girls had represented Indian junior team to play at Haarlem (Netherlands) and Battrop (Germany) from February 28 to March 11. He said in the above meets nearly 200 players from 23 countries took part and the contest was tough. He said Gutta Jwala and Shruti Kurien made it to the doubles quarter-final in both the championships. He said despite stiff competition, with a draw of 64 for girls doubles, Jwala and Shruti were able to conquer some of the top players of the world. In the German open, they lost to a Poland pair which finally remained runners-up in the meet.

In the boys’ section, Anup Sridhar was able to reach the last 16 in singles in the Dutch Open in a draw of 128, before going down to a seeded Japanese player. SDS Krishna and Nishad Dravid gave tough fight to their respective opponents in singles and both lost in the third round.

Mahajan said in both campionships ‘Hova courts’ were used and Victor, RSL shuttlecocks brand provided. He said the latest rule of showing red cards to the players was also implemented.

Kabaddi trials
The Chandigarh Kabaddi Association will hold trials for the UT kabaddi team (men) on Wednesday at 4 pm. The selected players will undergo a brief coaching camp before their participation in the North Zone Kabaddi Championship to be held at Northern Coalfields Limited, NCL Janpad Sonbhadar, from March 31 to April 2.

Bakshi nominated
Mr Rakesh Bakshi, secretary of the Chandigarh Football Association, has been nominated as a member of the disciplinary committee of the All-India Football Federation. Mr Bakshi will attend the first meeting of the AIFF at Bangalore on March 26.

Cycling Meet
The Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association will organise the Chandigarh Cycling Championships for senior, junior, sub-junior (boys and girls) on Sunday at Panjab University from 7.30 am onwards. According to Mr Rakesh Mohindra, secretary of the association, three events will be conducted in each category, including a cycle race on Indian-make cycles. Entries close at C-80, Sector 14 on Saturday.

Anoop wins golf tournament

Anoop Tajinder Singh, with a card of 77, was declared the gross winner in the monthly medal round of the Chandigarh Golf Club held yesterday. Dr Ravinder Chadha, who had a card of 84, took the runners-up position in the same section.

Brij Mohan Singh, who had a card of 70, was declared winner in the under- 50 years, section after turning in a better card in the back nine. Ms Bolaria, also with a card of 70, was declared runners-up, also on the basis of a better back nine.

S.S. Bains, with a card of 66, was declared winner in the 50 to 65 years, age group, while Col Harkirat Singh, with a card of 71, was declared runners-up in this section.

In the above 65 years, age group, H.S.Guron, with a card of 33, was declared winner, while Group Capt P.R. Singh, who had a card of 35, finished runners-up in this section.

Chess meet
The Chandigarh Chess Association will organise a chess tournament at Navodya Vidyalya, Sector 25, here from March 23 to 25. Entries close with Mr Karma Angdui, 1341-B, Sector 41-B, Chandigarh, according to a press note issued here on Monday.

Admn’s move to register salespersons

In a move to keep a check on the activities of door-to-door salespersons, the Chandigarh Administration today ordered that all salespersons in the city will have to be registered from May 1.

All manufacturers, distributors, institutions and other business houses, who have engaged persons for door-to-door sale or publicity are required to furnish the particulars of persons engaged by them in the office of the Deputy Commissioner at the Miscellaneous Branch, Room Number 17 on the first floor of the Estate Office building in Sector 17. The last date has been fixed as April 30.

The DC’s office has come out with a specified performa. The same shall be filled in by the firm in the identity card of the salespersons.

Mayor Goyal meets Adviser Nanda

Mayor Raj Kumar Goyal today met the Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mrs Neeru Nanda, to discuss some pertinent issues regarding opening a branch of the Department of Registration of births and death in sub-office; Mani Majra to issue birth and death certificates; rehabilitation of the evicted Sector 22 rehri and phari walas, reinstatement of the suspended MC employees and regularisation of certain areas in Mani Majra. These include Shastri Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Pipliwala and Marhiwala towns to enable the people to get their house numbers at the earliest.

The mayor sought an immediate action in this regard so that the problem being faced by the concerned segments can be redressed at the earliest and the Adviser on her part assured to direct the officials in this regards. He later also met the Finance Secretary.

Meanwhile, the Mayor has in a note sent to the MC Commissioner, Mr M.P. Singh, said that an official of the level of SDO, from the Horticulture and Roads divisions of the MC be deputed at the sub-office of Mani Majra so that the problems of the residents of Mani Majra and nearby areas be redressed there and then.
