Workshop on breast feeding concludes
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 16
The two-day workshop on breast feeding, organised by the Department of Paediatrics, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in collaboration with the Society to Voluntary Agencies (North), concluded here today at the Dumra Auditorium with the valedictory function.

On the second day of the workshop, the participants were told about breast feeding techniques by various experts. Discussions also took place as it had been observed that even in normal situations a lot of difficulties were experienced by mothers and they needed counselling by a health professional and a support of the family members. Gynaecologists, Paediatricians and nurses from all over the state benefitted from the workshop.

Dr Daljit Singh, Professor and Chief, Paediatrics Department, in his lecture said even in a caesarian case, the baby should receive exclusive breast feeding. The emptying of breast by suckling is the best method of lactation. He said the size of the breast does not govern the milk production as it is only the fat and the supportive tissue which modifies the size. Even small breast produce adequate milk since the milk producing alveoli and ducts are similar in all breasts. More than a million such alveoli are normally present in each breast.

Dr Harmesh Singh in his lecture said the common cause for poor feeding was sore nipples, crack nipples and mastitis. Poor attachment of child with mother can be improved upon by helping the mother to properly attach the baby with the breast. This milk can be stored for at least 6-8 hours in the room temperature.

Dr Tejinder Singh discussed the proper positioning of the baby and the mother.

During the valedictory function, certificates of participation were given to the delegates. Dr Sandeep Puri, Medical Superintendent and Mr Gurdev Singh, Director SOUSVA were amongst present on the occasion.
