Incredible win for India

Kolkata, March 15
India did the impossible today, humbling the all conquering Australians with a sensational victory, only the second team to win after following on in 1535 Test matches in the history of cricket.

Indians came back from the dead - beating the visitors by 171 runs taking all the 10 Australian wickets in two sessions on the final day of the second Test at the Eden Gardens to level the series 1-1 and end the record run of 16 consecutive Test wins by the visitors.

Young offspinner Harbhajan Singh brought down the formidable batting line up with six for 73, on top of his seven for 123 in the first innings, including the first hat-trick in Tests by an Indian for a remarkable 13 wickets for 196 runs.

But, it was the monumental knock of 281 by 26-year-old ‘man of the match’ V. V. S. Laxman which not only saved India from the ignominy of an innings defeat but laid the platform from which 20-year-old Harbhajan Singh, ably aided by Sachin Tendulkar (3/31), went on to destroy the mighty Aussie batting.

This was the third time in the long history of the game that a team went on to lose a Test after enforcing the follow on and to the Aussies goes the dubious distinction of ending up on the losing side all the three times. They lost on the first two occasions to ‘old enemy’ England, in 1894 at Sydney and 1981 at Leeds (England). Today, it was India’s turn to give them the treatment.

Earlier, resuming at their overnight 589 for four, the hosts declared their second innings at 657 for seven, leaving the visitors requiring 384 runs to win in 75 overs.

V. V. S. Laxman missed his triple century by 19 runs when he was caught at gully by Ricky Ponting off Glenn McGrath after adding just six runs to his overnight score. His 281 contained 44 hits to the fence. Dravid who shared a mammoth 376 run fifth wicket stand with Laxman, was also dismissed before he could reach his second Test double-century. He was run out for 180.

Captain Saurav Ganguly declared the innings one hour into the morning session with Zaheer Khan batting on 23 and Harbhajan Singh unbeaten on eight.

The game took a dramatic turn after the tea interval as Harbhajan Singh and Sachin Tendulkar exploited the turning track to devastating effect to claim five wickets in a span of 31 balls and swing the match in India’s favour.

The departure of skipper Steve Waugh triggered a middle-order collapse as Matthew Hayden (67), Ricky Ponting (0), Adam Gilchrist (0) and Shane Warne (0) returned to the pavilion in quick succession.

Harbhajan, who kept nagging the batsmen with a controlled line and length, provided the vital breakthrough when he got rid of Steve Waugh who was beginning to get a feel of the last day track.

Waugh, who scored a heroic century to pull his team out of trouble in the first innings, tried to flick Harbhajan but failed to keep the ball down and substitute fielder Hemang Badani held on to a smart catch at backward shortleg much to the delight of the Indians.

The dismissal of Waugh served as tonic for the hosts who suddenly raised their game by several notches to put pressure on their opponents.

Harbhajan struck again in the same over by having Ricky Ponting caught by Shiv Sunder Das at forward shortleg with the batsman yet to score.

Next to go was hard-hitting Adam Gilchrist, out for nought for the second time in the match, which served a big blow to the visitors.

Gilchrist, who had played in all the 16 Tests Australia had won before this match, was trapped plumb leg before the wicket by Tendulkar who was pressed into the attack just before the tea break.

Matthew Hayden, who looked quite comfortable at the crease despite wickets falling at regular intervals, finally perished, victim to another low ball from Tendulkar who made amends for failing with the bat by picking up a few important wickets.

In a reversal of roles, Tendulkar claimed his third wicket when he trapped Shane Warne leg before to leave the Aussies tottering at 174 for eight and facing defeat for the first time in two years.

Jason Gillespie and Michael Kasprowicz made a valiant effort to play out the remaining overs and managed to take the score to 191 before the 20-year old Harbhajan struck again by breaking their stubborn resistance.

Victory a good answer to critics: Saurav

Kolkata, March 15
An elated Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly today said the team’s stupendous victory over the mighty Australians in the second Test at the Eden Gardens here was a “good answer” to the critics who had written the team off.

“Shamefully you are taken apart by your own countrymen when you lose one Test. God is great. This victory is a good answer to everybody who had criticised the team after the Mumbai defeat,” Ganguly told a crowded post-match Press conference after his team’s dramatic 171-run victory that helped the Indians square the three-match series 1-1.

He said the team’s brilliant performance in the last three days of the match, particularly the two amazing knocks of V. V. S. Laxman and Rahul Dravid and the superlative bowling of Harbhajan Singh who returned with match figures of 13 for 196, won the match for India.

The captain said the team started smelling victory when Steve Waugh got out in the post-tea session to reduce the visitors to 166 for four.

Asked about the lessons learnt from the victory, Ganguly shot back “there are lessons for everybody. UNI

Bahutule, Kulkarni, Srinath in team

Kolkata, March 15
The national selectors today made three changes in the Indian side for the third and final cricket Test against Australia at Chennai bringing in leg spinner Sairaj Bahutule, left-arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni and speedster Javagal Srinath in places of Venkatesh Prasad, Venkatapathy Raju and Ashish Nehra.

Announcing the team after India’s sensational 171-run victory over Australia at Eden Gardens, BCCI secretary Jayant Lele said, “If Srinath and Mongia were not found fit before the third Test, they would be replaced by Orissa medium-pacer Debasish Mohanty and Mumbai stumper Samir Dighe.”

The third Test match will begin from March 18 at Chennai.

The following is the Indian side for the Chennai Test:
India:
Sourav Ganguly (captain), Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, V. V. S. Laxman, Shiv Sundar Das, Sadagoppan Ramesh, Nayan Mongia, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Sairaj Bahutule, Nilesh Kulkarni, Hemang Badani and Sarandip Singh.

All the five selectors, including selection committee chairman Chandu Borde, were present at the meeting to select the Indian team.

Speaking to newspersons, Mr Borde said medium-pacer Ajit Agarkar was not taken in as he was yet to be fit.

He said India might play three spinners at the Chennai Test depending on the Chepak wicket.

Asked why Sadagoppan Ramesh was selected inspite of his failure in both the innings here, Mr Borde said he was capable of making runs and so the selection committee persisted with him.

“We see performance and select the team accordingly. We can’t go by emotion. We select horses for course,” he said.

Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and coach John E. Wright also attended the selection meeting in the later stage.

Srinath is recovering from shoulder injury. Nayan Mongia was injured while keeping in the second innings as a delivery from Harbhajan Singh hit his nose.

Srinath and Mongia will undergo fitness test in Chennai tomorrow. UNI

Kiwis make confident start against Pak

Christchurch, March 15
Three days after being hammered by 299 runs in the first cricket Test, Mathew Sinclair led a New Zealand recovery with a belligerent unbeaten century on the opening day today of the second Test against Pakistan.

After losing the toss and being sent into bat, New Zealand reached 284 for five at stumps on the first day.

It was a remarkable turn around for the hosts, who lost all 10 second innings wickets within 40 runs on the fifth morning of the series opener in Auckland to concede a 0-1 lead in the three-match series.

Sinclair’s chanceless 161-ball knock was the mainstay for New Zealand after Mark Richardson (46) and Matthew Bell (75) laid the foundation with a 102-run opening stand.

At stumps, Sinclair was unbeaten on 100 with Craig McMillan not out on one.

Pakistan hit back in the final overs of the day with the second new ball to remove Nathan Astle (6) and night watchman Grant Bradburn (0) in successive overs.

After Richardson and Bell survived 12 overs from Waqar Younis and Mohammad Sami in a testing first hour, New Zealand batsmen took control of an overcast day with some courageous batting against an attack that at times struggled for length and direction.

Offspinner Saqlain Mushtaq, two for 64 in 28 overs, claimed the wickets of both openers.

Pakistan coach Javed Miandad praised the local lineup for its efforts. “They batted well and got partnerships going,” Miandad said. “We were unlucky. We missed catches and didn’t go for the half chances.”

Miandad said the Black Caps’ top order was shaky at the start, so Pakistan had not erred by sending the hosts in to bat after winning the toss.

“I still think it was a good decision,” he said. “The only way you could back yourself after going into the Test with three seamers is by putting them in. They were under pressure and underdogs going into the Test but they still batted well.”

The visitors were frustrated by a dropped catch in the third over of the day and some ordinary umpiring that appeared to strain relations between fast bowler Waqar Younis and Bell.

Bell was dropped by second slip Younis Khan off Waqar and soon after lunch local umpire Dave Quested gave two decisions in favour of the opener.

After surviving a lbw appeal on 49, Bell, on 54, was given another reprieve when Quested turned down a catch at the wicket.

After taking the side to 75 without loss at lunch, the openers were finally separated when Richardson was bowled by Saqlain.

The century stand was the first for New Zealand in 24 innings since Matt Horne and Gary Stead shared 131 against India at Ahmedabad in October 1999.

After Bell was out to a catch by short leg Faisal Iqbal, Sinclair and skipper Stephen Fleming — coming together at 163 for two — took New Zealand to 248 with a forceful 85-run stand in just 93 minutes before disaster struck.

Fleming, who hit four fours and a six in his 32, was too slow in responding to a call for a single by Sinclair and was run out by Younis’ throw to ‘keeper Moin Khan.

Giles, Croft restrict Sri Lanka

Colombo, March 15
England spinners Ashley Giles and Robert Croft captured four wickets for 14 runs to rock Sri Lanka late on the opening day of the third and final Test today.

Left-armer Giles snapped up Aravinda de Silva (38) and Russel Arnold (0) before off-spinner Croft removed Tillekeratne Dilshan (5) and Mahela Jayawardene (71) as Sri Lanka slumped from 205 for three to 219 for seven.

The Sri Lankans, who were 221 for seven at the close of an absorbing day’s cricket, had initially built a promising posiiton as De Silva and Jayawardene put on 97 for the fourth wicket.

However, Giles, who has taken two for 56, and Croft, with three for 40 from 28 overs, tilted the balance.

The series, which is level 1-1, has been overshadowed by umpiring controversy but the acrimony of the previous two Tests was absent as the players of both sides appeared to have heeded the ‘’final warning’’ about their behaviour from match referee Hanamunt Singh.

Umpires may be out, fears Dickie Bird

London, March 15
Former Test official Harold “Dickie” Bird fears that cricket is about to raise its finger and say “out” to umpires.

Angry that technology is taking over and dismayed by too many appeals, Bird believes it his colleagues could be forced out of the game altogether.

“The umpire is finished,” Bird said yesterday. “They could be playing without umpires as early as October.”

“They have had all of their authority stripped away from them and soon all they will have left to do is count to six and hold jumpers.”

Bird’s comments come amid an acrimonious series between Sri Lanka and England. AP

SBT shock Bagan; Tollygunge win

Thiruvananthapuram, March 15
Lowly-placed State Bank of Travancore humbled reigning champions Mohun Bagan, Kolkata, 4-2 in the 13th round of the fifth National Football League here last night at the floodlit Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium.

Strikers Asif Saheer (2), Abdul Hakkim and right half Shabir Ali scored for SBT who led 3-1 at half time.

Right striker Brazilian Jose Bareto netted both the goals for Mohun Bagan.

SBT, who thus avenged their away defeat at the hands of Mohun Bagan, have moved one place ahead from their present 11th position in the National Football League table.

They now have 11 points from 13 matches. Bagan, who are currently in third place, have 22 points from 13 matches.

SBT opened their account in the eighth minute of the game through Asif Saheer who fastened on a low right wing cross from Sabir Ali. They were two up a couple of minutes later when Hakkim latched on a left wing cross from Saheer.

Bagan relieved pressure and forced three flag kicks. Off the third, Jose Bareto found the roof of the SBT net with a thundering shot.

This was in the 30th minute. Eight minutes later SBT forged further ahead through Saheer, who rifled the ball home after trapping a pass from Hakkim.

Game after the resumption saw Bagan mounting relentless pressure, but the SBT defence held ground. SBT made it 4-1 in the 55th through a breakaway raid, Sahir Ali shooting home after eluding a host of defenders.

Ten minutes before final whistle Jose Bareto received a through pass from James Singh and steered the ball into the SBT net from the fringe of the box.

KOLKATA: Tollygunge Agragami got a much needed win against Salgaocar SC, beating the Goan outfit by a solitary first half goal.

The all-important goal came in the 27th minute of the game through Saliu Abdulwasu when his powerful long range shot entered the goal after hitting the bar post.

Salgaocar custodian Juje Siddi was taken by surprise and reacted late. He was able to get a hand on the ball, but it had little effect.

In an otherwise drab match, both the teams lost a number of opportunities to score as the strikers messed sitting chances.

Tollygunge put pressure on the Goan defenders from the beginning and got a couple of chances within the first 10 minutes, but squandered them due to lack of cohesion inside the penalty box.

Salgaocar slowly got into the game after looking rusty in the initial minutes and launched a few moves, but their over-reliance on attacking through the wings proved to be their bane with Tollygunge using off-side traps to good use.

The visitors came close to scoring in the 20th minute of the game, but an excellent free kick by Denis Cabral from just outside the box flew past the bar missing it by inches.

Tollygunge has now picked up 12 points from as many matches. PTI

Punjab Police edge past J&K Bank
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, March 15
Punjab Police, Jalandhar edged past Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Srinagar, 2-1 to earn three full points in a group B match of the second division National Football League (North Zone) at the Ambedkar Stadium here today. In another match, 39 Gorkha Training Centre beat Chandigarh Police by a lone goal.

The Jammu and Kashmir Bankmen stunned the cops in the 17th minute, when they forged ahead through a goal by inside-left Ishfaq Ahmad. But Punjab Police hit back with power to equalise in the 40th minute through inside right Sher Singh, who seized an opportunity due to the wobbly keeping of bank custodian Iftikhar Ahmad. Sher Singh struck the match-winner too, in the second half, again due to the lapse of the custodian. In the 31st minute, Gurpreet Singh took a shy at the goal, which was fisted out by Iftikhar Ahamd, but who lost his balance and fell in the process. Sher Singh latched on to the ball and booted it home.

In the second match, 39 Gorkha Training Centre, Varanasi beat Chandigarh Police by a lone goal. The Gorkhas, after wasting a number of chances, netted the matchwinner in the 21st minute of second half through Sunil Chhetri.

Indian National Football Club (Delhi) and Border Security Force (Jalandhar) recorded contrasting wins in the opening day of the second division National Football League (North Zone) Championship here yesterday.

Defending champions Indian Nationals managed to register an unimpressive 2-0 victory over City Club missing many scoring chances.

After the recess, however, Pushpender opened the account for Nationals by deflecting in a left flank cross in the 65th minute.

Nationals’ second goal came through their defender Yakubh Ribiu Mallam’s long ranger which surprised City Club’s custodian Sunil Kumar.

In the second match, BSF outplayed Himalayan Tigers, Himachal Pradesh, 4-0.

Randhawa, Bhandari card 67
Our Sports Reporter

Gurgaon, March 15
Jyoti Randhawa started his title defence brilliantly with a spectacular 67 at the Wills Indian Open which started at the Classic Golf Resort this morning. He was tied with Delhi’s Vivek Bhandari, American Jeff Burns and Thai golfer Thongchai Jaidee, who all shot five-under-par, one shot ahead of six players tied at 68.

Teeing off from the 10th hole, Jyoti made a slow start, dropping his first shot of the day on the par four 12th hole, but made up with birdies on the 13th and 14th holes. He then dropped another stroke on the 16th before picking up another shot on the par-five 18th, which got him going for his second nine. He eagled the par five third hole, after hitting a two-iron on to the green and making the putt to jump to three-under-par. He then followed it up with a birdie on the next and a final birdie on the ninth to card a 67.

“I don’t feel that I’ve played well at all. I hit the ball all over the place and think I was just lucky to shoot five-under-par,” was how the defending champion described his round.

Jyoti was tied with Vivek Bhandari, who is making a return after taking time off due to a neck injury. Bhandari had a bogey-free 67, making only one birdie in the front nine, on the par-four eighth hole to make the turn at one-under-par. He then birdied the 10th, 14th, 15th and 17th holes to finish at five-under-par for the day.

“My best birdie was on the 15th hole, where I hit the ball to 15 feet, out of the bunker and made the putt for birdie,” said a satisfied Vivek. He added: “I should have also made a birdie on the last hole, where I hit a great drive, but I’m not complaining.”

Nico Van Rensburg who played with Jyoti today, had an incredible front nine, five-under-par 31. Teeing off from the 10th hole, he had a perfect start, with a hat trick of birdies on the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and another on the par-five 18th hole. However, his latter nine let him down as he made one bogey and eight pars to finish with a 68.

Playing later in the day, Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee and American Jeff Burns were the other two players to tie for the lead after 18 holes.

Andrew Pitts, Prayad Marksaeng, Nico Van Rensburg, Chris Williams, Dvid Gleeson and Zaw Moe shot four-under-par 68 and were tied at fifth place, while 1998 Indian Open champion Firoz Ali, Arjun Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Kang Ji-man, Kyle Woodbine, Arjun Singh, Gerald Rosales and Robert Huxtable were two shots behind the leader with similar scores of 69.

Arjun Atwal was amongst the numerous golfers who fought the difficult pin positions and after making one birdie in each nine; he dropped a shot on the 17th hole after hitting the bunker and duffing his second shot.
