Workshop on breast feeding opens
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 15
A two-day workshop on breast feeding organised by the Pediatrics Department of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in collaboration with a non-government organisation, Society for Service to Voluntary Agencies, for the implementation of Global Friendly Hospital Initiative Programme of WHO and UNICEF was inaugurated today at Dumra Auditorium.

Dr Sandeep Puri, medical suprentendent, DMCH said pediatricians, gynaecologists and nurses from all over the state had come to attend the workshop. Dr Puri said the concept of workshop was to promote, protect and support the concept of breast feeding.

The workshop includes a series of lectures by various experts and practical training about the right methods of breast feeding.

Mr Prem Nath Gupta, secretary, managing society of DMCH in his inaugural address said though a lot of effort had been made by the government in the form of family planning programme to check the population growth and other related problems but there was a little improvement. He said such health awareness programmes should be encouraged and promoted.

Dr A. B.Thomas, Principal, Christian Medical College and Hospital, said there were many myths attached to breast feeding and awareness was needed to shed these. He said that women want to avoid breast feeding because of the misconception that they will loose their figure by doing so, which was a false notion.

Dr Daljit Singh, the course director, in his lecture said prolectin and oxytoxin were the hormones produced by the pituitary gland in response to suckling. Emptying of breasts was vital for the success of breast feeding. A confident stress free mother and proper attachment to the baby ensured easy breast feeding. Dr Daljit Singh also emphasised although breast feeding seemed to be a simple activity, a number of factors interfere with its successful initiation. Preparation, support and training were required for the mothers.

Dr Harmesh Singh Bains said breast feeding was important to avoid supplementary milk or water and the new born should be put to the breast milk within half to one hour of birth.
