Comprehensive win for
Aussies
The victory target of 47 was nothing for the Aussies who achieved it without losing a wicket. Indians began the day cautiously on a wicket that was turning quite a lot, and the pacemen still being able to generate enough bounce to trouble the batsmen. In fact, runs were so hard to come by in the morning after Sachin started the day with two glorious boundaries off McGrath, that at one stage in the session. The Indians went without scoring for 43 deliveries. Dravid scored his first run of the morning after 40 balls. However, after playing out Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie who began the attack, both batsmen gained in confidence with Dravid greeting Fleming with a sweetly timed cover drive. Tendulkar also took a liking to Warne, hitting him for two fours in an over. India went into lunch at 116 for two. After the break, Tendulkar moved into top gear as he first hit Warne to the point for a boundary and then followed it up with a rasping straight drive off Gillespie. However, Sachin, who reached his 50 in 95 balls with nine blows to the fence, fell to an absolutely stunning catch by Ricky Ponting off Mark Waugh for 65. Tendulkar struck 11 well-struck boundaries in his 107-ball knock when disaster struck the hosts who lost four vital wickets within the space of 20 runs which made an Australian win, their fifth straight over India, a formality. After Tendulkar’s stunning dismissal, Dravid was bowled by Shane Warne for a patient 39 and Mark Waugh then dismissed Ajit Agarkar for his seventh consecutive nought against the Australians. Captain Saurav Ganguly, was late to take off for a single and was found short of his crease by an accurate throw by Michael Slater to be run out for one. VVS Laxman flourished for some time cracking three successive fours off Warne to take his team past the deficit but was out immediately after, caught by Adam Gilchrist off Mark Waugh. Harbhajan Singh, who scalped four wickets in Australian first innings, made a defiant unbeaten 17 but that was hardly enough as rest of the tailenders were dismissed tamely. With the win only a formality, the Aussies went about their task with clinical precision and completed the affair in just seven overs. Openers Mathew Hayden, confident after his first innings century, and Michael Slater made short work of the bowlers and were never threatened. Team will have to “work
on all areas” Mumbai, March 1 “We will have to work on our overall cricket,” Ganguly said after India succumbed to their fifth straight Test defeat to Australia today. “There are two more matches to go... Hopefully we will come back in the series,” he said. The Indian skipper conceded the visitors played better cricket and said his team could not have done much about the way Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden stuck to their task in the Aussie first innings. “We had a chance when Australians were 99 for 5 but the way Gilchrist and Hayden played, we could not have done much about it,” Ganguly said. Australian skipper Steve Waugh, while lauding his “great team”, said, the decision to bowl first was not a gamble which paid off. Waugh said his team would play positive cricket in the remaining two Tests to keep their sight on the series.

Slater gets away with a warning Mumbai, March 1 Slater got into heated verbal exchanges with umpire S Venkatraghvan and Dravid and created unruly scenes after his appeal was denied. Slater claimed to have picked up a low catch, just inches above ground but after television replays proved inconclusive third umpire Narendra Menon gave the benefit of doubt to the batsman who was batting on 22. Match-referee Camie Smith of West Indies told reporters that Slater had been warned for his behaviour.

Shoaib reported for throwing again Christchurch, March 1 Pakistan team management confirmed today that umpires Steve Dunne and Doug Cowie reported concerns over Shoaib’s bowling action during the fifth and final one-day international between New Zealand and Pakistan at Carisbrook yesterday, a match won by New Zealand by four wickets that gave them the series 3-2. The International Cricket Council (ICC) also confirmed that the two most senior umpires in New Zealand cricket were not happy with Shoaib’s action. Shoaib, who returned to international cricket after a 10-month absence, had been under intense scrutiny from the time he arrived in New Zealand last month. “I can’t go through this all over again,” Shoaib told The Associated Press. “I’ve been through a lot of pain since I was called. The last year has been a really bad one for me. I am really disturbed. “I was cleared by experts in Australia and I just can’t see why people can’t accept the fact that I was born the way I am.” “I’ve worked really hard to get back into the side. Please give me a break. Don’t try to ruin my career.” After he led Pakistan to victory in the first one-day international in Auckland with a career-best five for 19 in his comeback match, he was accused in New Zealand media reports of chucking, thus placing extra pressure on the match officials. Shoaib, (25,) broke down during the second match in Napier and played for the first time yesterday after missing games in Wellington and Christchurch. Regarded as the world’s fastest bowler, Shoaib had his action questioned in November 1999 when umpires - Englishman Peter Willey and Australia’s Darrell Hair - reported him through New Zealand match referee John Reid after the third Test against Australia in Perth. After a brief ban, Shoaib was forced to work on his action before he broke down again during Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies early last year. Pakistan team manager Faqir Aizazuddin confirmed Shoaib will no longer be part of a new-look tour party as the tourists prepare for the start of a three-Test series. Shoaib will return home tomorrow with all-rounders Azhar Mahmood and Shahid Afridi, batsman Imran Nazir and off spinner Saqlain Mushtaq and make room for the new arrivals - batsman Younis Khan, off spinner Arshad Khan and wicketkeeper/batsman Humayun Farhat. Two other players are waiting for visa approvals from the New Zealand High Commission in Singapore. Back in Pakistan, Shoaib will do remedial work with a bowling advisory panel appointed by the Pakistan Cricket Board. After a six-week period during which he will be allowed to play international cricket, a complete assessment in writing will be presented to the ICC’s newly appointed Bowling Review Group. If Shoaib is reported for the second time during a 12-month period, the ICC will appoint one of its bowling advisers to work directly with the bowler. Then if Shoaib was to be reported for the third time during this period and if the ICC’s Bowling Review Group finds him in breach of Law 24.2, he will be banned for a 12-month period from the date of the hearing. “At this stage there is no point in keeping him,” Faqir said of Shoaib’s status in New Zealand. “We’re very disappointed with what’s happened and our board will take care of the issue. “The decision to send Shoaib home was taken long before the umpires reported him. He’s not match fit.” Dr. Tauseef Razzaq, who has been working on the bowler, said Shoaib was suffering from “hypo flexible joints” that have been medically proven during his days in Perth with bio-mechanical expert Dr. Daryl Foster. Foster rescued the career of Sri Lanka’s Matchwinning off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who bowls with a bent arm - a birth deformity - and was no-balled for throwing three times in matches in Australia. Shoaib is making arrangements to fly to Perth to gather more expert opinion and films from the University of Western Australia’s human movements laboratory. “I’ve got a great career ahead of me,” Shoaib said. “It looks like no one wants to listen to me. “Everyone is deserting me at this crucial time. I am playing for Pakistan and I am a national asset. They must stand by me.”

Thousands bid farewell to Don Bradman Adelaide, March 1 Bradman’s only son John walked for a short way in front of the silver-grey hearse carrying his father’s body, as waiting crowds of people — young and old — broke into warm applause to bid farewell to the world’s most prolific batsman. Some threw flowers and others saluted with cricket bats as the funeral cortege, escorted by police cars and motorcycles, drove slowly along the 15 km route from a suburban funeral home to the picturesque Centennial Park cemetery. Traffic banked up behind the procession and slowed further when people surged onto the streets to pay their last respects. “Farewell to Gentleman Don. Rest in Peace,” read one placard, held aloft by a young mother on the edge of a main road. “I feel very emotional, very sad,” said Des Aplin, (73), as the glass-sided hearse slipped behind the cemetery gates for the evening service, attended by one of Bradman’s greatest fans, Australia’s Prime Minister John Howard. “He was a wonderful man,” added Aplin’s wife Helen, (67), admitting to feeling a personal loss at Bradman’s death as the warm autumn sun set behind the cemetery. “It was inevitable...But when it came, it just shocked us. He was unique, a part of our history.” The reclusive Bradman, who died on Sunday aged 92, turned down the offer of a state funeral, asking instead to be privately cremated. Details about the service, attended by only about 100 people, including the Governor-General, Sir William Deane, and about Bradman’s final resting place have been kept private. A public memorial service, to be held on March 25 at St Peter’s Cathedral, is to be broadcast live across Australia. Bradman, who has long been regarded by sports-mad Australians as a national treasure, compiled 6,996 runs in 52 Tests during the 1930s and 1940s to finish with a tantalising average of 99.94. “He was one of the best,” said Loretta Keough, (62), who waited outside the funeral home for more than an hour to catch a last glimpse of the man known to generations as simply “The Don”.

East Bengal have edge on JCT in
NFL Chandigarh, March 1 Recent performances clearly put East Bengal in the driver's seat but JCT, despite the lacklustre showing, have the capability to hit back. After all, it is again time to settle old scores and the rivalry dating back to the seventies which is all set to be rekindled will certainly bring out the best in the two teams. The following are the standings of the teams in the NFL on conclusion of the ninth round(read under teams, matches played, won, drawn, lost, goals for, goals against, and points): Teams P W D L GF GA Pts. East-Bengal 9 7 1 1 15 3 22 FC-Kochin 9 6 3 0 17 9 21 Salgaocar 9 6 1 2 14 7 19 Mohun-Bagan 9 4 3 2 11 8 15 Vasco-SC 9 3 5 1 6 6 14 Churchill-Bros 9 3 2 4 10 8 11 Mahindras 9 2 4 3 7 8 10 Air-India 9 2 3 4 10 14 9 ITI 9 1 4 4 3 6 7 Tollygunge 9 1 4 4 2 7 7 JCT 9 0 4 5 7 15 4 SBT 9 0 4 5 6 17 4 East Bengal, under the watchful eyes of Manoranjan Bhattacharjee, already carry the favourites tag after a string of victories in the current league. With 22 points from seven victories and one draw, the red and gold brigade from the 'Mecca' of Indian football are far ahead of the mill men. East Bengal launched their campaign with a 2-0 win over Tollygunge on December 15. Thereafter, they suffered a reverse against ITI, losing to the Bangalore outfit by a solitary goal. But subsequently, the Kolkata outfit were on a song, beating SBT 3-1, drawing with Churchill Brothers 1-1; beating Salgaocar 2-0, Air-India 1-0, Mohun Bagan 1-0, Vasco 3-0, and Mahindra United 2-0. The victory against Mohun Bagan at Kolkata on February 17 served as a great morale booster. At present East Bengal have a formidable attack spearheaded by star Nigerian Omolaja Olalekan, who incidentally is one of the leading scorers along with FC Kochin's Joe Paul Ancheri and Sunday Seah and Churchill's Igor Shikvirin with four goals to his credit. He is assisted by Dipendu Biswas and Bijen Singh who have also been performing well. In all, East Bengal have scored 15 goals, conceding only three in nine matches. A unique feature of East Bengal's campaign is that even defenders have been adding to the goal tally. Star Ghanian defender Suleh Musah, former JCT player Dipankar Roy and Surkumar Singh have scored two goals each. East Bengal have a strong defence manned by Ghanians Suleh Musah and Jackson Egygpong besides the dependable Deepak Mondal, who until last season was with JCT. In Carlton Chapman, the Kolkata outfit have an experienced midfielder. Goalkeeping is another department where East Bengal hold the edge. It goes to the credit of custodian Sangram Mukherjee for conceding the least number of goals, three to be precise, in the league so far. JCT, on the other hand, have yet to notch up a single win. They have managed only four points from four draws, losing five matches. However, despite missing the services of Hardeep Sangha and Hardeep Saini, who are nursing injuries, JCT put up a creditable show against Air-India in their last match. In fact the match produced the largest number of goals with JCT eventually losing 3-4. The return of the promising Jaswinder made the attack sharper and Ram Pal, along with striker Hardip Gill displayed fine understanding. Jaswant has also displayed aggressiveness as a winger and in fact his substitution in the match against Air-India upset the rhythm of the team. Newcomer Balbir failed to make an impact and Air-India capitalised on every opportunity that came their way. The absence of defenders Prabhjot Singh and Kuldip Singh, who are on the injured list, has left the defence vulnerable. Nevertheless, the experienced Tarsem Lal has been shouldering the bulk of the load. However, how successful he is in warding off the East Bengal threat with the assistance of wing back Daljit, who has just recovered from an injury, remains to be seen. |
USA shock Mexico in World Cup qualifiers Columbus (Ohio), March 1 The first half was lack-lustre but two goals in the second period brought the game to life. Clint Mathis, a 43rd minute substitute for the injured Claudio Reyna, set up the first goal with a long pass two minutes into the second half. The ball bounced off goalkeeper Jorge Campos, who was well outside his area, and Wolff pounced to slot home from 12 metres. The USA then withstood some Mexican pressure and Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Brad Friedel did well to save a well-struck effort from Francisco Palencia in the 70th minute. Stewart sealed victory with two minutes to go when he converted a pass by Wolff nine metres out. KINSTON (Jamaica): Tyrone Marshall scored a spectacular first-half goal on Wednesday as Jamaica beat arch-rivals Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in a world cup qualifying soccer match. Marshall unleashed a ferocious right-foot shot from 23 metres in the 18th minute as the Reggae Boyz got off to a winning start in the final qualifying round. It was the first international goal for Marshall, who plays for the Miami Fusion in Major League Soccer. A capacity crowd of 35,000 watched the intense match. In an other match Costa Rica and Honduras played to a 2-2 draw. Jamaica and the USA, each with three points, lead the qualifying group while Costa Rica and Honduras have one point apiece. The top three teams in the six-team group qualify for the 2002 World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan. The Jamaicans had the first real scoring chance in the eighth minute when Ricardo Gardener’s downward header was clutched by goalkeeper Shaka Hislop. Two minutes later, Trinidadian striker Dwight Yorke, who plays for English Premier League Club Manchester United, shot just wide of the upright after a glancing header by fellow forward Stern John caught the Jamaican defence off guard. Trinidad and Tobago’s best chance came in the 32nd minute in a goalmouth scramble which resulted in Jamaican defender Ian Goodison clearing a loose ball off the goal line. In San Jose, Costa Rica, a last-minute goal by Rodrigo Cordero gave Costa Rica a 2-2 tie with Honduras. Jose Luis Pineda struck first for Honduras, sliding through the Costa Rican defence and knocking a header past goalie Alvaro Mesen in the third minute. Honduras held the lead until the 69th minute, when Ronald Fonseca Milton equalised for Costa Rica. Milton Nunez, who had a goal disqualified after being whistled for offsides in the first half, broke free of the central defence in the 85th minute and blasted a kick just inside the goal, silencing the stadium of 18,000 spectators. But as the final whistle neared, Cordero made a desperate kick which was slightly deflected by defender Milton Reyes, confusing goalkeeper Noel Valladares and giving Costa Rica the draw. BRUSSELS: Belgium thrashed whipping boys San Marino 10-1, a record win for the hosts in a competitive match, in their World Cup 2002 qualifier here on Wednesday to move above Scotland at the top of group 6. The Belgians beat Zambia by the same margin in 1994 but that was in a friendly. A hat-trick by substitute Bob Peeters in 12 madcap minutes in the second-half rounded off the rout after the hosts led 3-0 at half-time through goals by Yves Vanderhaeghe, Emile Mpenza and Bart Goor. But they added a further seven after the break before San Marino claimed a last minute goal thanks to Andy Selva, their only full-time professional. While Peeters went on the rampage for probably the easiest hat-trick of his career, Vanderhaeghe and Goor also added to their tally with a goal apiece while Walter Baseggio and Veteran Marc Wilmots were also on target. The win leaves Belgium level on seven points with Scotland but ahead on goal difference, with both having played three games.

Vasco stun Salgaocar Margao, March 1 Salgaocar shot into the lead in the 15th minute through Bruno Coutinho. Alvito D’Cunha, who took the free kick from the right following medio Ravi Babu handling the ball, floated it into the box beating the entire rival defence. Coutinho neatly headed the ball into the net giving no chance to advancing keeper Rogerio Ramos. Vasco, who dominated the second half, restored parity in the 57th minute through defender Seby Dias. Vasco coach Derrick Perrira’s ploy to bring in Gregory Clark in place of Ravi Babu paid dividends as Vasco midfield functioned well and restored parity through Seby Dias. Substitute Gregory Clark, who took the flag kick from the right, floated the ball into the goal where defender Seby Dias leaped high to nod home from close. The goal acted as a tonic for Vasco, who stormed into the rival half more often and after missing close chances scored the all important goal in injury time. Daniel Colaco worked on the right sending a diagonal pass to substitute Kishore Palkar into the box, who beat the rival keeper to give Vasco full points. With this win, Vasco collected 17 points to move to fourth place displacing Mohun Bagan, who have 16 points from 10 matches. Panaji: Scoring once in each half, Zee Churchill Brothers managed to overcome stiff resistance to down Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) 2-1 in the National Football League at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, today. Zee Churchill, who started well but lost their midfield possession later in the first half, scored through strikers Francis Silveira (3rd) and Igor Shkvirin (55th). ITI, who regrouped in the latter part of the first half found the equaliser in the 33rd minute through a penalty by their captain K V Dhanesh to have the teams level 1-1 at lemon break.
