Dr Nivedita regales CHANDIGARH,
Feb 19 — For those who have even a little interest in classical music, this day brought a lot in its fold. Performing at a cultural evening organised by the National Society of Sciences, Crafts and Creative Arts, was a noted classical vocalist based at Delhi. Dr Nivedita Singh, who is famous for her powerful rendering of
khayal performed for the classical music lovers for about an hour at the Punjab Kala Bhawan today. Dr Nivedita, who presented compositions in
raaga yaman, bihaag and bharavi here today, has been a
shishya of Prof Tara Singh who belonged to the famous Gwalior
Ghairana. Nivedita began her rendering with a bhajan Bhavani jagdambe surdevi
in raag yaman. She then went on to sing another composition Main to
jaane na dehun balma. The next in line was Nivedita’s performance in
raaga bihaag (teen taal) in which she sang Mandir deep
dhare. From there she graduated to shabad gayaki and presented
Sahib mera meherbaan in raaga bhairavi. Accompanying Dr Nivedita were Paramjit Singh of the PU Music Department on the tabla and Neeraj Gandhi on the harmonium. Speaking on the occasion, the singer said though classical music had been faced with challenges throughout the 5000-year span, it had always managed to emerge stronger. Putting to rest the apprehension that it was becoming increasingly difficult to arrange classical music concerts in the age of pop music, Nivedita said there was no such fear because such concerts always had a select gathering. |
Self bared in prints CHANDIGARH, Feb 19 — The most striking thing about Niyeti Chadha’s works is their simplicity and honesty. The 14 works — all graphic prints — by this final year student of print making at the Government College of Art, Sector 10, are all about personal experiences. That is exactly why the exhibit, which went on show today at the IndusInd Bank Art Gallery in Sector 8, has been personally titled. The young, budding artist explained, “I have deliberately called this exhibition Very Personal. Actually the show was not planned. Nor have I really worked with the motive of showing my prints. I was ready with the works that I am now displaying. They are all classroom products.” It was good to learn that the prints had been created in an academic ambience. Good because they do not look monitored at all. There is a certain degree of freedom and space attached to each graphic print in evidence. The works have been inspired by the daily diary entries by the artist who has chosen to reach out to the world in her own special way. So there different moods being played within different frames. Where in one work, Niyeti works on the consequences of lost dreams, in the other she shows herself standing at the crossroads of youth and adolescence, wondering over what has gone by and what lies in store. Moon figures specially in her works. “That is not quite deliberate. Just that the moon lets loose a number of hidden desires. I have tried to artistically bare some feelings which would otherwise never have been expressed. I tend to think on a very different wavelength whenever I am bathed by the moonlight.” Though the works are personalised, they have a universal value in the sense of relativity they carry. One can easily identify with the feelings which lie hidden behind the frames. The exhibition was inaugurated by Principal of the College of Art, Prof Prem Singh. |
