MC to take action against liquor vend owners
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Feb 14 — The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has decided to tighten its noose over the liquor vends operating on MC land. The MC has issued notices to those liquor vend owners who have not paid the ground rent till date. They have been given a period of seven days to deposit it, failing which the vends will be closed down or even demolished by the enforcement staff.

A decision to this effect has been taken keeping in view the expiry of the contracts of these liquor vends on March 31. There are as many as 44 such vends in various sectors and villages of the city. Of these 25 are located on the MC land. The MC had fixed a rent of Rs 20,000 per month for those operating from prime location and Rs 10,000 per month from the others.

According to sources in the MC, most of these liquor vend owners have not paid the fixed charges to the MC, while few others have made part payments. The list of the defaulters was prepared following a survey conducted by Assistant Commissioner-I, Mr Ashok Vashisht. This includes 20 vend owners , who are required to deposit the balance amounts within seven days.

Sources further add that the MC is keen to recover the balance dues before the next auction of these liquor vends on March 31 for it is not necessary that these owners get the contract of these vends in the next financial year.

MC to extend privatisation scheme
Tribune News Service

SAS NAGAR, Feb 14 — The local Municipal Council has finalised a plan to extend the scheme on the privatisation of sanitation work to new areas.

Sanitation work in a major part of the Industrial Area, certain residential phases, Shahi Majra and Mohali villages was earlier given on private contract in August last year till March 31 this year.

The council President, Mr Kulwant Singh, said that the extension plan, involving a cost of about Rs 20 lakh, would cover Phases 3A, 3B1, 3BII, V and IX. The council was working out the relevant details.

He said it was difficult to keep the town clean because of the inadequate number of safai karamcharis. The number of such karamcharis had remained the same (125) for the past many years even though the town had grown considerably during the period. New recruitments could not be effected in view of the state government ban. Privatisation was the only solution to the problem.

The council would incur an expenditure of between Rs 40 lakh and Rs 50 lakh from August 1 last year to March 31 this year on sanitation work, he said.

At present under the private contract there are 153 safai sewaks, nine supervisors, 42 coolies and nine tractor-trailers on the job.
