Slum children to be vaccinated

CHANDIGARH, Feb 13 — The Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh has decided to administer typhoid vaccines to children below 6 years of age in the slum areas of the city free of cost under the Central Government’s Swaran Jayanti Shahiri Rozgar Yojana. Over 1000 children this age group will be administered the vaccine in 13 anganwadi centres of the slums on February 22 and 23.

A strategy in this regard was chalked out at a special meeting held today under the chairmanship of the Assistant Commissioner-I, Mr Ashok Vashisht. Giving this information, Mr Vashisht said that funds for procuring the vaccine viols (Rs 1280 per viol) will be provided by the MC, while the NGO’s will arrange doctors and para medicos for the camp. The two NGO’s, which will be a part of the exercise, are Jan Shikshan Sansthan and the Rotary Club, Chandigarh. Each child will be administered a dose of 10 ml.

Mr Vashist further disclosed that under this yojna, they have already organised various programmes for providing medical facilities to people in slum areas, for educational upliftment and subsidy on loans to the unemployed.

City cop best shooter in all-India meet

CHANDIGARH, Feb 13 — Constable Holinder Singh of the Chandigarh police won the medal for being the best shooter in the pistol shooting event of the 44th All-India Police Duty Meet at Indore recently. This is for the first time that someone of the Chandigarh police has won this medal.

Constable Holinder Singh, a 1991 recruit, was part of the 16-member team of shooters who representing the city police in the meet that was held from February 7 to 10. He also won a silver medal and a bronze medal there. The Chandigarh police has given him a cash award of Rs 4,000 for his achievement. The team was placed seventh overall out of 28 teams of various states and paramilitary forces. As many as 83 shooters participated in the meet.

The pistol-shooting team was led by ASI Paraminder Singh and the rifle-shooting team by SI Ramesh Chander. Inspector Daljit Singh was manager of this team which returned here yesterday. The team was placed third in the pistol shooting event.
