BSF deployed in Udhampur, curfew continues

JAMMU, Feb 10 — The BSF was deployed in the trouble-torn areas of Udhampur city as curfew continued for the second day today.

Official sources said people tried to hold a protest march today also, but the police and the civil authorities’ did not allow them to gather. The situation was tense but under control.

An indefinite curfew was clamped in the city areas yesterday when a mob, protesting against the authorities alleged failure in tracing an abducted girl Meenakshi, turned violent and set ablaze shops after ransacking some.

The police has arrested Vikram Salathia, one of the three suspected abductors of Meenakshi.

Yesterday, the protesters had also clashed with the police, who fired some rounds in the air to quell the violence. The mob had also set a police vehicle on fire and pelted policemen with stones.

Senior police and administrative authorities were monitoring the situation, and a meeting will be held in the evening to review it.
