SRINAGAR, Feb 6 — The USA has formulated a plan to solve the Kashmir issue, which enjoys the support of foreign-based Kashmiri lobbyists. This was disclosed today by a militant-turned politician who launched his own party in the name of Tehreek-e-Husoole Aman (Movement for Peace), which will mobilise public opinion for the US agenda.

Khursheed Mir, who launched the party here today, has recently returned from Pakistan from where he toured some western and Muslim countries. He said when the militants brought the Kashmir issue in focus the opinion was that now was the time for the Kashmiri people to take advantage of the changed situation and play a political role.

He hailed New Delhi’s peace move and the response shown to it by the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), which he said enjoyed a true representative status. He urged the Hurriyat Conference to move forward by persuading militants to cooperate. He said his party would play the role of a facilitator in the peace process. He suggested that borders restrictions be eased so that separated Kashmiri people are allowed to meet each other.

NEW DELHI, Feb 6 — Extending its support to the peace moves of government in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress today stressed more coordination between the state and Central Governments so that concrete results could be achieved from the peace process.

A delegation of senior party leaders met Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee here this evening to know government’s view on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Home Minister L.K. Advani, Defence Minister George Fernandes and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh were also present at the one-and-a-half hour meeting.

Besides Mr Manmohan Singh, the Congress delegation comprised Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mr Arjun Singh and Mr Natwar Singh. This is the first such meeting between the government and the main Opposition party since the government announced ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir.

Talking to TNS, Mr Azad said that Congress leaders reminded the Centre that after the massacre of Sikhs in Chattisinghpora, the government had assured to take necessary security measures, but the recent killings of Sikhs in the valley suggested that not enough had been done.

While extending support towards government moves aimed at bringing peace to the valley, the Congress leaders said that the government should put its act together and see that innocent lives were not lost.

Though the government had claimed that the ceasefire was announced after taking political parties into confidence, the Congress denied that it had been consulted.

The government told the Congress leaders that overall situation had improved after the ceasefire.Top
