Ten trucks to carry relief material today
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — The UT Red Cross will send 10 truckloads of relief material, including medicines, blankets, dry foods, contributed by the city residents, to Bhuj tomorrow.

CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — Dr Kiran Bedi, Joint Commissioner (Training), exhorted the newly graduated and serving nurses to do the healer’s job, but with a smile. Police reaches out to drug addicts
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — The Chandigarh police organised an interactive session with residents of Kumhar Colony and Janta Colony today as part of its drive to eradicate alcoholism and drug abuse among those who live here.

Khehar issued notice to Punwire Mobile Communication Limited, Mohali, for February 22, 2001 on a petition moved by Titan Industries Limited, New Delhi, seeking appointment of the official liquidator as the provisional liquidator to take immediate charge of all the properties and assets of Punwire Mobile Communication during the pendency of the winding up proceedings pending against the company in the Punjab and Haryana High Court for February 22, 2001.

CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — It was a wedding of a different kind. While the 60-plus phoren bridegroom took the traditional four pheras around the Guru Granth Sahib, the bride, also phoren all decked up in a style of her own, insisted on her “veil” being lifted behind her.

CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — Even as the police has ordered an inquiry into the allegations of police torture by a phariwala in Sec-22, the former MP, Mr Satya Pal Jain, has said that this was a slur on the Police Department.

Excise offices to remain open on Saturday
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — Mr Inder Raj Soni, Commissioner Central Excise, today announced that all offices under the Central Excise Commissionerate, Chandigarh, with jurisdiction over the manufacturing units situated in Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Ropar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib will remain open on each Saturday till March 31.

Octroi men, shopkeepers clash
ZIRAKPUR, Feb 3 — Tension gripped the local market following a clash between shopkeepers and the octroi-collection staff here yesterday. The trouble began when the persons deployed at an octroi post asked a rehriwala to pay octroi.

Dog show today
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — The 30th and 31st All-Breeds Championship Dog Show will be organised by the Chandigarh Kennel Club here tomorrow. Talking to newsmen, Maj Trilochan Singh, the Secretary-General of the Club, said that more than 300 entries had been received from all over the country for the show.

Army recruitment rally from Feb 12
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — A recruitment rally will be held by the Punjab Regiment at Chandimandir cantonment from February 12, 2001. According to a statement here, recruitment is being held for Sikh (other than Mazhabi and Ramdasia) and Dogra candidates and for tradesmen.

CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — There is good news for upcoming actors and actresses as the Punjabi channel, Lashkara, has launched a talent hunt.

Record number of passports issued
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — The Regional Passport Office here issued a record number of over 13,000 passports in the month of January. Giving this information here today, the Regional Passport Officer, Mr Jagdish Chand, claimed that this had been achieved even though the office was short of staff. This was the highest figure for any month by the office so far, he said.

Home Guard hurt, one held
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — A Punjab police driver, Ashok Kumar, was held after he reportedly hit a PCR ambulance driven by a Home Guard volunteer, Dalbir Singh, near Sector 39 yesterday. Dalbir Singh received injuries and had to be admitted to General Hospital here.

Students’ interest in science ‘waning’
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — Body is the biggest chemical factory covering a whole range of related complex events. This was said by Dr C.N.R Rao from the Jawahar Lal Nehru Centre for Advance Scientific Research and the Indian Institute of Science, in his talk on ‘a Celebration of Chemistry’ at the local DAV College here today. 

Yogananda scholarships
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — The Yogada Satsang Society Dhyan Kendra , Sector 29, a branch of the Yogada Satsang Society of India, has constituted eight Paramhansa Yogananda scholarships for the post graduate students. A sum of Rs 250 per month will be given each month to the scholarship holders.

Bail granted in criminal intimidation case
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — The UT Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr Justice S.K. Goel, today granted bail to a resident of Sangrur, Ravinder Singh, in a case of criminal intimidation. The accused had moved a bail plea under Section 439 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Court casts doubt on Admn survey
CHANDIGARH, Feb 3 — A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court comprising Mr Justice J.L. Gupta and Mr Justice M.S. Gill, today, directed the Chandigarh Administration to verify the authenticity of a survey report submitted today in the court by an official of the Administration.
