Private students a harassed lot
By Deepkamal Kaur

LUDHIANA, Feb 2 — ‘Private’ students of Class X, appearing in exams conducted by the Punjab School Education Board, are a harassed lot. While their practical examinations are just two days away, they are yet to get their roll numbers and the information regarding the examination centre.

The students have been queuing for the whole day in front of the board’s office in Punjabi Bhavan here for the past three days but they have yet not received their roll numbers. Some of the students are coming from rural areas, who are not only wasting their money while commuting but also the time.

A group of students from Bhail village said they had been coming daily to the office since Monday. On reaching the office, they were informed by officers to wait for two hours. Finally, after the wait each day they had to go back without any information.

Another group of students from a private academy in Civil Lines said, “The board officers here have told us to wait for two hours. So we would wait till that time and in case we do not get the roll numbers we will have to move to Mohali tomorrow”.

Ludhiana Tribune found that more than 50 such students and private academy owners were waiting for their roll numbers. Board officers here said they had been receiving hundreds of telephone enquiries from the students for the past few days. They said since they had no information regarding the delivery of the roll numbers, they too were helpless.

The board officers admitted that the delay in dispatch and delivery might be due to a few holidays in the last month. Also since the board is conducting the practicals before the written examination for the first time, some problems in proper coordination may have taken place, they said.

Tribune News Service

LUDHIANA, Feb 2 — Ludhiana Sanskritik Samagam (LSS) is all set to bring an evening of entertainment to celebrate Yuva Basant Utsav, a talent- hunt programme, on February 3 at Nehru Sidhant Kendra.

With the increasing number of channels, national as well as Punjabi, like Tara, Alpha, Lashkara and DD Punjabi, LSS believes that there is a great scope for artists to make their mark. So far, there has been no organised talent-hunt programme for artists of Ludhiana. LSS had taken the initiative to establish a transparent system of talent-hunt in collaboration with the city colleges. The Yuva Basant Utsav was the first such presentation and it has been co-sponsored by Nehru Sidhant Kendra.

The events chosen for the talent-hunt include sugam sangeet, ghazal, classical vocal, classical dance, folk items and popular items like giddha and bhangra. The presentation is by winners of each category and the participants have been drawn from various colleges, including SDP College, Ramgarhia College, Government College for Men, Government College for Women, Khalsa College for Women and GGN Khalsa College.

The selection for final presentation of items has been done by a team of judges drawn from various colleges.
