3 militants killed in valley

SRINAGAR, Feb 2 (UNI) — Seven persons, including three militants, were killed and five jawans injured in the Kashmir valley since last evening, the police said.

A police spokesman giving details about yesterday’s militant attack on Srinagar Doordarshan said that three rifle grenades were fired by militants from an unknown place.

He said the grenades exploded near the main gate of the complex causing injuries to four security personnel, who were hospitalised.

The militants shot dead Abdul Hamid Malik at Path Makham village in the central Kashmir district of Badgam this afternoon.

Security forces killed a militant in an encounter at Salwah Kalaban village this morning.

Militants shot at and critically wounded one Zakir Ali Khan at Batapora in Kupwara district last night.

He said militants attacked a police camp with automatic weapons near petrol pump Kishtwar last night. Police personnel also retaliated and the exchange continued for some time. However, no one was hurt.

One Jawan was injured when militants detonated a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) at Ashmuqam in south Kashmir this morning, said an official spokesman.

Militants fired at a joint patrol of security forces and the Jammu and Kashmir police Special Operation Group at Behak in Kupwara late last night with automatic weapons. The security forces also retaliated and in the four-hour-long clash two militants were killed.

Two AK 47 rifles, one wireless set, eight magazines and seven grenades were recovered from the slain militants.

Meanwhile, Fayaz Ahmad Dar, who was shot at and critically wounded by militants at Gund Gasim last evening died in the hospital this morning, the spokesman said.

Also, in Kupwara one person was shot dead by unknown assailants and the body of one Mohammad Ayub was recovered from Batakote in north Kashmir last evening, he added. Militants also set on fire a house at Zachaldar last night causing extensive damage.

The police used tear-gas and fire warning shots this morning when the people protesting the alleged custodial deaths in Jammu and Kashmir turned violent.

The gathering in the heart of Srinagar first raised slogans against the police and security forces and then started throwing stones. A number of vehicles were damaged in stone-pelting. To disperse the mob the police had to resort to force.

Meanwhile, business activities in the city remained suspended for the second day today in protest against the death of a three-wheeler driver, allegedly in the custody of the security forces.

The three wheelers remained off the road. However, other transport services were normal.

JAMMU: Firing from across the border has reduced, but infiltration continues, two months after the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir, Inspector General of Border Security Force (Jammu Frontier) Vijay Raman has said.

Security forces have suspended search and combat operations against the militants after the ceasefire was announced by the government, but the forces were free to launch operations on specific intelligence inputs, he told reporters last evening.
