New courses at Govt Polytechnic

LUDHIANA, Jan 25 — The fresh batch of short-term courses for beauticians, fashion designers, interior decorators, computer operators, typist, shorthand, garment makers, TV mechanics, refrigeration and air conditioning would commence at Government Polytechnic for Women from February 1. The principal, Ms Harvinder Kaur Toor, informed that there would be no fee for these courses, as they were conducted by community polytechnic wing.

A one-month Information Technology course would be started at the polytechnic from February 15. The certificate for the course would be given by the Government of Punjab, informed the principal.

The polytechnic was also starting coaching classes for Joint Entrance Test for admission to Diploma Courses in various polytechnics of Punjab. The coaching for matriculates would begin from March 2. For those who were yet to appear in the matriculation examination this year, the coaching would begin from April 4, she further informed.

Students educated about police role

DORAHA, Jan 25 — In a special campaign initiated by the Khanna Police, students of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, were educated about the role of police personnel in the security of the people.

Interacting with students, SHO Payal, Mr Ashish Kapoor, explained that there was a lack of understanding about the working of police stations. “Students should be provided with first-hand knowledge of the police and its working.” The information regarding traffic rules was given, “Its violation could result in dire consequences,” said the officer.

Later, the students could accused the police of high-handedness and corruption, to which the SHO replied that all police personnel not be listed under the same category. “The time has come when the police department should be purged of these corrupt elements and faith restored in the hearts of common people,” said the officer.

Students with bus passes related their bitter experiences of harassment at the hands of private bus conductors who were never ready to acknowledge their passes. They demanded a solution for the same to which the SHO ensured that an enquiry would be conducted and a remedy definitely be sough.

Mr Karnail Singh, in charge police chowki Doraha, urged that students to stay away from drugs that were ruining the lives of many today and had become a major cause of road accidents. Mr Singh said, “Out of a total of 80 persons who die in road accidents, 35 are students, who are found to be under the influence of intoxicants.”

A word of assurance from the side of the students, in this regard came from the principal of the college, Mr Jaswant Singh Gill.

R-Day celebrated

LUDHIANA, Jan 25 — Students and staff of Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, and Kundan Vidya Mandir, city branch, celebrated the Republic Day here today.

At Sacred Heart Convent School, an inter-house group patriotic singing competition was held, in which Red House won the first prize for the song, Mera desh mera mulk mera yeh watan, shanti ka unnati ka pyar ka chaman. A prayer dance on Satyam shivam sundaram was held. A group dance on the number, Maa tujhe salaam, was also held. Later, the teachers gave the Republic Day message to the students telling them of the importance of the day.

At Kundan Vidya Mandir, city branch, nursery and KG students celebrated Republic Day. Ms Vibha Sharma, Hindi teacher, addressed students and spoke on the importance of national symbols. Bhanu Goel of Class KG recited the poem, Jhanda hamara. A group song, I love my India, was also presented by tiny tots. Finally students of Class VII distributed flags made by them among nursery and KG kids.
