Self-immolation by 20-year-old
CHANDIGARH, Jan 23 — A student committed suicide by setting himself on fire and two persons were hospitalised following accidents in the city today. One person was admitted to hospital after he consumed poison and three others were injured in quarrels.

PANCHKULA, Jan 23 — While there are no clues to the double-murder of the Madhoks in Sector 2 discovered dead at their residence yesterday, investigations have revealed that it possibly took place on the night of January 12 and not January 10.

Officialese begins for five new sectors

1,500 pouches of liquor seized
KHARAR, Jan 23 — The Sohana police has arrested two persons and seized 1,500 pouches of liquor which was brought from Chandigarh in a Jeep (HR-01 E 1618). Mr G.P. Singh, SHO, said they were arrested yesterday and a case had been registered against them under the Excise Act.

Central power from February 1
CHANDIGARH, Jan 23 — The union territory will start getting a share of power from central power projects from February 1. The total allocation made by the Union Power Ministry — of about 45 mega watt — will, however, be received from April 1 onwards. 

Common land issue: MC seeks probe
KHARAR, Jan 23 — The local Municipal Committee has demanded that the allotment of nearly 1,000 bighas of common land of Khanpur village, which falls in the Kharar municipal limits, should be cancelled and handed over to the committee.

Three cops get 7-yr RI in theft case
CHANDIGARH, Jan 23 — Three Punjab police personnel were sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment by the UT Additional District and Session Judge today, in a case of theft. Three constables of Punjab Police — Baljit Singh, Rajvinder Singh, Gurdas Chand were booked under three different cases of theft.

Stone crushers to have power till Jan 31
ZIRAKPUR, Jan 23 — The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Punjab State Electricity Board not to disconnect the power connections to different stone crushers in the Zirakpur area till January 31. The court has also granted approval of the change in user of the land in question for running the stone crushers.

Bail for three in jailbreak case
