Grant for physically challenged students stopped

LUDHIANA, Jan 20 — With financial grants no more being received from the Centre under the Integrated Scheme for Disabled Children, the physically challenged students studying at Government Multipurpose Senior Secondary School, Cinema Road, find it hard to cope up with the educational expenses.

The scheme was started in 1993-94. Modest amount which the students got was used by them to buy school books, stationery and aids. Now two years have passed and no aid has been received by the students.

When the scheme was introduced there were just six physically challenged students in the school. The following year there were nearly 20 new admissions of physically challenged students even to the school gave priority to challenged students.

Some part of the amount was also used by the school authorities to set up a room where a special classes and career counselling used to be held for such children.

The students had to get the medical certificate from the Chief Medical Officer of the district indicating the level of their disability. According to the percentage disability, the students received a stipend ranging between Rs 400 and Rs 4000 annually. The stipend amount used to be deposited account of the students, informed a teachers of the school.

The scheme was also simultaneously started in Government Multipurpose Senior Secondary School at Patiala and Government Senior Secondary School at Jalandhar. The sources revealed that the grant has also been stopped for both these schools.

Aao bune for school children in Feb

LUDHIANA, Jan 20 — About 20,000 children from 118 school from all over Punjab are participating in the ‘Aao bune knitting contest’ being organised by the Vardhman group of industries. Six zones have been set up for the preliminary contests.

According to Mr V. K. Goyal, Chief Executive of the group, six zones include Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ropar, Patiala and Chandigarh. He said, the basic purpose of the contest was to develop the habit of knitting among people.

The preliminary contests will be organised within the schools. Three winners will be chosen from each class who will take part in the intra zonal contests being held from February 5 to 17 at different places. It would be followed by an exhibition in which the work of the winners at the zonal level would be displayed and three final winners would be selected by a team of judges from different zones.

Mr Goyal said Rs 5,100, Rs 3,100 and Rs 2,100 would be given to the first, second and third prize winner, respectively. Besides the winners in intra school and intra zonal contest will also get prizes.

Mr Goyal said both girls and boys will participate in the contest. A similar contest was organised at the KVM school here in which over 100 students participated.

Malwa School celebrates foundation day

LUDHIANA, Jan 20 — Malwa Central Public School, Model Gram, celebrated its foundation day here today. Path of Sri Sukhmani Sahib, was held by Khalsa Dewan, Ludhiana, which is running a chain of educational institutions in the city.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Daljinder Singh, Manager of the school, lauded the hard work being put in by the staff and assured the parents that Khalsa Dewan would not spare any effort to being the school on a par with any other school in the state.

Khalsa College and HSB Club reach finals

LUDHIANA, Jan 20 — Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar and HSB Club, Banga, will clash for top honours in the S. Nachhatar Singh Gill Memorial Ludhiana Cup Football tournament being played at Police Lines Grounds here.

In the two semi-finals played today, Jalandhar boys edged past Nav Bharat College, Narur Panchta, 1-0 while the spirited HSB Club, Banga, routed Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib, 2-0. The final will be played tomorrow.

Despite relentless attacks against the Nav Bharat College, the Jalandhar boys fumbled at crucial moments and the two teams were locked goalless when sides changed. In the dying moments of the match, Inderjit Singh scored off a rebound from the rival goalkeeper to keep his team in the reckoning.

In the second semi-final, the Banga team got a shot in the arm when the Fatehgarh Sahib boys inflicted a self goal to trail 0-1 in 21st minute. It was a header from stopper Satvir Singh off a cross kick from Jaspal Singh that proved to be the undoing of Mata Gujri College. The winners further consolidated their lead to reach an invincible position when Harvinder Singh took a cracking shot from 30 yards and put the ball in the goal mouth in the 43rd minute.
