CHANDIGARH, Jan 11 — In a drive against vehicles not following traffic rules, 157 buses were challaned, here today. The drive was carried out by the State Transport Authority, Chandigarh. The Chandigarh Traffic Police also assisted the STA in its drive.

A senior official in the STA said buses belonging to Punjab and Haryana roadways and some buses of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking were challaned for various offences under Motor Vehicle Act. He said a few private buses were also challaned.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr B.S. Bassi, when contacted, said the drive would continue. He said the idea was not to challan but to educate the drivers to obey traffic rules. Mr Bassi advised truck drivers to properly display the number plates on their vehicles.

On January 8, the Chandigarh Traffic Police, under a special drive, had challaned over 240 vehicles. Fifty trucks with mud-coated or blurry number plates were challaned by the police. Truck drivers without numbers painted on both of the vehicle were also challaned. Drivers of three commercial vehicles were challaned for driving vehicles without indicators.
