Polio drops administered to children

LUDHIANA, Dec 10 — Thousands of children were administered polio drops today at different places in the city. Government agencies including the schools and hospitals and many non-government and private organisations had set up special stalls for giving polio drops to the children. Counters had been set up at railway station, bus stand and at other various public places to ensure that no child is left without polio drops.

According to the Civil Surgeon, Dr Rajinder Kaur, arrangements had been made at 1,954 places in and around the city for providing polio drops to the children. Besides 100 mobile teams had also been put into action to give polio drops to children in slum and other peripheral areas of the city.

Rotary and Lions clubs organised separate stalls from providing polio drops to the children. The Rotary Club, Ludhiana, organised a special function which was attended among other by Mr Arun Jain, district Governor of Rotary International district 3070. He emphasised the need for total eradication of polio from the country and stated that since 1985 the Rotary International had spent $ 500 million (Rs 2,300 crore) for eradication of polio. He disclosed that there has been no case of polio in district 3070, comprising of J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab up to Khana since April 1, 2000. He said, the Rotary was committed to eradicate the disease.

The Rupika Ladies Club also organised a pulse polio camp where hundreds of children were administered polio drops.

A pulse polio camp was organised by the students of the NSS of the Government Senior Secondary School (Multipurpose) at Naulakha Cinema Road.

Navjot, Narinder win judo gold

LUDHIANA, Dec 10 — National champion Navjot Chana once again mesmerised the audience by his scintillating performance in the Ludhiana District Judo Championship here on Sunday. He won a gold medal in 55-kg class. International player Narinder Kaur also bagged a gold. Girls of Government High School, Division 3, bagged maximum number of gold in the sub-junior category. They clinched four gold and two silver medals.

The other results are as follows:

Sub-junior girls: 23 kg — Rajani 1; 27 kg — Nidhi 1, Mona 2; 32 kg — Alka 1, Harjinder 2; 36 kg — Ritu Bala 1, Anju 2; 40 kg — Jasbir Kaur 1, Rupinder Kaur 2; 44 kg — Meenu 1.

Senior girls: 44 kg — Narinder Kaur 1, Neeraj 2, Seema and Jaspreet 3; 48 kg — Nimarta Sharma 1, Iqbal Kaur 2, Neetu Rani and Yogita Rai 3; 57 kg — Anju 1, Parminder Kaur 2, Manita and Harpal 3; 63 kg — Renu Deepak 1, Harjot Kaur 2, Sarabjeet Kaur and Harpreet Kaur 3; 70 kg — Kamaljeet Kaur 1, Ranjeet Kaur 2, Anubhav 3; 78 kg — Sunita 1, Richa Gupty 2.

Junior girls: 40 kg — Kamaljeet 1, Kushboo 2, Parveen and Kulwinder Kaur 3; 44 kg — Surinder 1, Puja Sharma 2, Kiranjeet and Amandeep Kaur 3; 48 kg — Sunita 1, Hema 2, Shobha and Arti 3; 52 kg — Sukhjeet Kaur 1, Suman 2, Anish and Savita 3; 57 kg — Reena 1, Anita 2, Reetu Sharma 3; 63 kg — Rajwant 1, Manpreet 2; above 63 kg — Gagandeep 1, Santosh 2; above 78 kg — Neelan Walia 1, Rupinder Kaur 2.
