Teachers’ strike on Dec 12

LUDHIANA, Dec 6 — In response to a call given by the All-India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (AIFUCTO), the members of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU) will join the protest march to Parliament on December 12 in Delhi, where college and university teachers from all over the country are converging upon the UGC office.

According to Prof K B S Sodhi, president of the union, 25 per cent of the members will join the protest march in Delhi and the rest of the members will observe higher education bandh from third period onwards and staging dharnas outside the principals’ offices in their respective colleges.

Demands of the teachers include implementation of career advancement scheme, parity of directors of physical education and librarians with lecturers, relaxation in eligibility conditions for principals, relaxation from NET/SLET to Ph.D holders for lecturership, introduction of third promotion, readers’ designation to selection grade lecturers, posts of readers and professors in colleges and orders on the issues agreed upon between AIFUCTO leadership and HRD Ministry on September 5, 1995, and October 6, 1996.

The Punjab Government College Teachers’ Association will also participate in the march to Parliament on December 12. Mr Jaipal Singh and Mr Balwinder Singh, president and general secretary, respectively, of PGCTA, said those unable to make it to New Delhi would sit on dharna on the campus of their colleges.

Home Science students hold exhibition

LUDHIANA, Dec 6 — The Department of Home Science, Extension Education, College of Home Science, PAU, Ludhiana, in collaboration with IFWA celebrated International Day of Women in agriculture in Pamal village.

Dr J S Kolar, Director, Extension Education, PAU, presided over the function and took a round of an exhibition. In his presidential remark he emphasised on the economic independence of women by adopting an enterprise like rabbit farming, vegetable and flower cultivation, mushroom cultivation, bee-keeping etc.

Dr Geeta Goyal, Head, Department of Home Science, Extension Education, highlighted the role of women in agriculture and related farm and homestead activities. She further stated that to improve the status of farm women, new technologies and messages should be disseminated to the rural families by using various media.

An exhibition on various areas of home science was put up by the students and teachers of College of Home Science. The exhibition included displays and demonstrations on energy saving devices, tie and dye, batik, stain removal, balanced and nutritious foods, educational toys for children, pot painting, flower making and arrangements etc. About 500 women from the rural areas visited the mela and took keen interest in exhibition and demonstrations.

MLAI convention concludes

Ludhiana, Dec 6 — The National Convention of the Medical Library Association of India (MLAI) concluded at Dumra Auditorium Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, here today.

Hundreds of delegates from India and abroad attended the conference, based on the theme, ‘New approaches for sharing information amongst health science library : prospect and retrospect’.

A scientific session took place on the concluding day which was chaired by Mr Porntip Anaprayot. The first paper was presented by Mr V. Newton, Mr D. Joyson Soundrajan and Mr I. Jebakumar Azariah of Vellore on,’ Traditional means of information sharing among Indian health sciences libraries in digital age’. MR S. Radha Krishan Murthy from Hyderabad read a paper on Ethics of resources sharing amongst health science libraries. Mr R. Chandra, Mr A. Kumat, Mr Dutta and Mr R.K. Sharma from Delhi presented a paper on ‘Managing information on ‘thyroid disorders” and its dissemination through bibliographic’.

Gaiety marks annual day celebrations

LUDHIANA, Dec 6 — Over 300 students were given away prizes at annual function organised at Sargodha National Public Senior Secondary School, Field Gunj, here today.

The students were given away prizes for their performance in academics, sports and other inter-school and inter-house competitions. The cultural programme began with the shabad Doye kar jor karo ardas, followed by a song Hearty hearty welcome to you all. Tiny tots presented an action song Jungle se do nikle bhalu. Dance on an English number was performed by Class XI girls. Fisherman dance was presented by students of Classes I to IV.

Harsimran Singh of Class XII enthralled the audience with the song Chhala. Boys of Class XII also performed bhangra on Kachehri ch mele. Rajasthani dance on the number Aayo re maro dholna. Over 30 students of Class IX to XII sashayed down the ramp in a modelling event.

Dr Kehar Singh, Chairman, Punjab School Education Board, was the chief guest on the occasion. Ms Narinder Kaur, Deputy Secretary, PSEB, Ms Jasbir Kaur, Circle Education Officer, Nabha, and Ms Usha Sidhu, District Education Officer, were also present.

Green Grove Public School celebrates annual day

KHANNA, Dec 6 — Green Grove Public School organised its annual day function here today. Mr Jagdish Singh Garcha, Technical Minister, Punjab, was the chief guest. The function was presided over by singers Sardool Sikander and Amar Nuri.

Mr Garcha lighted the ceremonial lamp. The Principal, Mr Sunil Bagga, read the annual school report. The chairperson, Mr Gurtej Singh Sehgal, awarded Rs 5,000 to the staff members for their hard work. Ms Sonia Gujral was declared the best teacher of the school.

Children presented a cultural programme which started with a welcome song. The main attractions were the dress round by polytechnic girls, skating, bhangra and an English play, Tom Sawyer. The function ended with the national anthem.

Hans Raj Hans honoured at Baba Farid mela

LUDHIANA, Dec 6 — The first Baba Farid Mela held at Kohara today got an overwhelming response. The mela was organised by Baba Farid Foundation International, Ludhiana to promote cultural activities in the area.

Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans was given the Baba Farid Award. Hans appreciated the efforts of the foundation in encouraging the rural youth to participate in cultural activities. He opined that an artist should have a sense of serving music and society. An artist could give a new direction to society , he claimed.

Upcoming singer Manjit Rupowalia and other new singers regaled the audience. Sant Ajit Singh was the chief guest. The Minister of State for Agriculture, Mr Y. Naik, inaugurated the mela.

Waris Shah mela on Dec 24

LUDHIANA, Dec 6 — Waris Shah mela would be held on December 24 at Basant Park. This was disclosed by Mr Sohan Singh Goga, President, United Youth Federation, in a meeting here today.

The mela would be inaugurated by Mr D.R. Bhatti, Additional Director General, Punjab Police. Mr Goga said prominent promoters of Punjabi culture world would be honoured.

Singers Jaswant Sandeela, Hakam Bakhtriwala, Ranjeet Mani, Ajay Deol, Suman Dutta, Harneet Neetu, Angrez Ali, Ravinder Garewal, Sukhwinder Sukhi, Harbans Sahota and Baljinder Rimpi will perform on the occasion.
