Chandigarh-Ambala highway closed for a year
Construction of railway overbridge
DERA BASSI, Dec 4 — The busy Chandigarh-Ambala national highway will remain closed from tomorrow and vehicular traffic will be diverted from Bhankharpur towards Mubarikpur to rejoin the highway beyond Dera Bassi.

New Dy Conservator of Forests for UT
CHANDIGARH, Dec 4 — A new Deputy Conservator of Forests has been appointed to replace Mr H.S. Sohal. Mr Ishwar Singh, a 1988 batch Indian Forest Service official, has joined the Chandigarh Administration, however, Mr Sohal is yet to be relieved of his charge.

MC plan to start day markets afresh
CHANDIGARH, Dec 4 — The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh is considering afresh the proposal of starting day markets in various parts of the city on a rotational basis to rehabilitate rehri/phariwalas, it is reliably learnt.

Kamov choppers to be overhauled in city

Harkrishan School clarifies stand
Chandigarh, Dec 4 —The Sri Guru Harkrishan Public Educational Society, Sector 38, Chandigarh, has clarified that the issue of upgradation of the school from primary to secondary and Senior Secondary, (with reference to the welfare society statement in a news report published on December 1), had been decided by a division bench of the Haryana and Punjab High Court in December 97. 

Contempt notice to HSSC chief, director
CHANDIGARH, Dec 4 — Mr Justice ML Singhal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued contempt notice to Haryana Staff Selection Commission Amir Chand Chawla and Director of Secondary Education RK Mahapatra on a petition filed by Mr BK Sharma, Science master of the Government Middle School, Kohlapur (Kurukshetra), to show cause why contempt proceeding should not be launched against them.

Chandigarh, Dec 4 — The Punjab Governor, Lt Gen J.F.R. Jacob, today underlined the need for upgrading health infrastructure, especially in rural areas, to provide health cover to the rural population.

CHANDIGARH, Dec 4 — The local branch of the Indian Medical Association has criticised the administration for not taking concrete steps to check the menace of quackery which is spreading at a very fast rate in the city and its surrounding areas.

Upgradation of cancer treatment facilities
CHANDIGARH, Dec 4 — The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sanctioned Rs 2 crore to the Radiotherapy and Oncology Department at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, for setting up a Cobalt 60 teletherapy unit for treatment of cancer patients in the hospital.

MC panel suggestion on community centres
CHANDIGARH, Dec 4 — The art and culture committee of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh at its meeting held here today recommended that the management of the community centres should be handed over to the members of the respective centres in that area. A detailed plan regarding this was drawn by the MC sometime ago to revive some of these centres, which were not being put to much use.
