Healthy baby contest

LUDHIANA, Nov 12 — A healthy baby contest, organised by the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, was held at Lions Bhavan here today. The tiny tots were dressed colourfully for the occasion. The selection of the ''healthy baby'' was done according to the physical and mental growth, complete immunisation, general appearance of the child and the parents' knowledge about childcare.

The contest was divided into five categories and three prizes were announced in each category. More than 450 names were registered for the show and about 375 children took part in it. The judges for the healthy baby contest were renowned paediatricians of the city who included Dr A.S. Chawla, Dr Rajinder Gulhati, Dr Harvinder Singh, Dr Sukhmeet Singh and Dr S.S. Luthra.

Dr Rajinder Gulhati, Secretary, IAP, informed that the overall aim of the contest was to bring awakening among the parents about the good health of their children. The chief guest on the occasion was Dr L.S. Chawla, former Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid University.

In the zero to one year category, Gaurav Kohli was declared first and Vaibhav Rattan and Mohit Sharma were declared second and third, respectively.

In the one to two years of age group, Isan Singh Gill, Shivam and Dasanjit Singh were given the first, second and third prizes, respectively.

Gursimranpreet Kaur, Garry Bhatia and Kanika Bedi were the prize winners in the two to three years age group.

In the category of three to four years of age, Divit Maini came first with Juhy Bansal in second position and Asmita Aneja got the third prize.

In the four to five years age group, Karanbir Brar was declared first and Simran Sidhu and Vani Gulhati were adjudged second and third, respectively.

Divit Maini was declared the millennium baby and was given a prize of Rs 2,100.

Doctors provided free vaccination consultations to the mothers on the occasion.

PAU scientist umpire for Faridabad match

LUDHIANA, Nov 12 — Dr Manjit Singh Mahal, an entomologist of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), will be an umpire for the three-day cricket match between President XI and Zimbabwe at Faridabad. Tomorrow is the first day of the match.

Dr Mahal was an umpire for a match between India A and Pakistan in February, 1999. He was the captain of the PAU team for four years. Dr Mahal joined the Punjab State Umpires Panel in 1982. He qualified to be on the Ranji Umpires Panel in 1986.

Dr Mahal has been on the All-India Umpires Panel since 1990.

CoVS win cricket match

LUDHIANA, Nov 12 — The College of Veterinary Sciences (CoVS) registered their first victory in the first match over the College of Agriculture Engineering (CoAE) by a margin of 110 runs in the PAU inter-college cricket tournament here today.

The CoVS won the toss and elected to bat first. The CoVS made 155 run in 32 overs all out. The CoAE could score only 45 runs in 18.1 overs and lost all wickets.

Kanwarjit Singh Bawa of CoVS made 63 run with the help of four boundaries and two sixes, while Parveh, Vikas and Nitin scored 19, 11 and 13 runs, respectively. Vikas of CoVS took five wickets in seven overs for 20 runs, while Jaspreet and Harish took three and two wickets, respectively.
