KVM team wins inter-school quiz

LUDHIANA, Nov 9 — Oxford University Press organised an inter-school ‘Find out’ quiz contest at BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School here today.

Nearly 25 teams from schools of Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Rada Saheb and Mandi Ahmedgarh participated. Each team comprised four students from classes IV to VII. The first round was of a written test in which eight teams were screened. These included Kundan Vidya Mandir, Sacred Heart Convent School, Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Guru Nanak Public School, BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, MGN Public School, Kapurthala, St Joseph’s Convent School, Jalandhar and St Francis School, Amritsar.

The eight teams then participated in six rounds. The first round was the general knowledge round with questions generally based on current affairs. The second round was the personality round in which a silhouette of a personality was shown on the screen and the students were asked to identify it.

The third round which was the two in one round. It was again a personality round in which faces of two personalities were mixed on computer and shown as one. Clues were given to the students. For instance, when picture of Amir Khan and Amir Sohail were mixed, they were told that they shared a common name. When pictures of Shilpa Shetty and Madhuri Dixit were mixed, they were told that they are film stars.

The fourth round was an audio round in which a variety of numbers from Hindi films, classical music and English music were played and the students were asked questions based on the audio clips. This was followed by the speed round in which the students had to say “yes” or “no” to five questions. The last round was again the general knowledge round.

The team of Vivek, Anubhav, Smeeksha and Kohtas from Kundan Vidya Mandir was declared first with 105 points, the team Abhay, Akshay, Eshar and Rabheg from Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, was second with 75 points and the team of Amritpal, Reeshil, Anuj and Marg from MGN Public School, Kapurthala, was declared third.

The quiz master, Mr Barry O’ Brien, conducted the show in such a way that not only the contestants but also the audience had a lot of fun. After every round, there were questions for the audience and they were also given prizes. In the end, Barry told the teachers of the school that learning could be a great fun if some novelty is introduced in the process. Back

 

GCB College win hockey tourney

LUDHIANA, Nov 9 — Government College for Boys (GCB), Ludhiana, clinched the Panjab University Inter-College Division A Hockey Tournament here today. They defeated Arya College (AC), Ludhiana in a one-sided match by 6-0.

The match started on a slow note with both teams trying to make advances into the defences of their rivals. But the efforts of right-in Prabjit Singh of GCB, bore fruits in the 9th minute when he scored the first goal for his team through a splendid solo effort. Arya College tried their level best to equalise but their efforts were thwarted by the strong GCB defenders. Arya College could capitalise on the couple of penalty corners. Left-in Satwinder Singh of GCB increased the tally by one goal in the 34th minute.

In second half, the game remained slow till the 19th minute when left-out Satnam Singh scored the third goal. Arya College could not stop the forwards of the GCB as a result of which right-in Narinder Singh and left-out Satnam Singh struck in the 25th and 26th minutes, respectively, to take the tally to 5-0. Malwiner sealed the fate of Arya College in the 33rd minute by scoring the last and sixth goal.

Volleyball tourney
The holders, Khalsa College, Gardhiwala, once again retained the Panjab University Inter-College Division B Volleyball Championship here today. They beat BSSG Government College, Sidhsar in a closely contested match by 3-0 (29-27, 25-11, 25-20).

Resham Singh, lifter, Sanjeev and Sukhdeep both smashers of Khalsa College played exceptionally well help their team to snatch the title.

Cricket meet
Ludhiana reached the final of Dhruv Pandove Inter-District (U-16 boys) Cricket Tournament. Ludhiana defeated Amritsar by of four runs.

Amritsar won the toss and opted to bat first. Amritsar made 195 runs in 78.4 overs and lost all wickets. Ludhiana achieved the target in 81 overs after losing seven wickets and made 199 runs. Ludhiana will play final match with Patiala tomorrow.

Senior athletics championship

LUDHIANA, Nov 9 — The 77th Punjab State Senior Athletics Championship organised by Ludhiana District Athletics Association (LDAA) is scheduled to be held from November 14 at Panjab Agriculture University stadium

According to a press release issued here today by LDAA, there would be two categories u-22 and open (men & women). Athletes will be selected on the basis of their performance in the championship for junior u-22 National Athletics meet which is scheduled to be held from November 20 at Visakhapatnam.Back
