Low quality cosmetics damage skin
From Our Correspondent

LUDHIANA, Oct 5 — “The increasing use of low-quality cosmetics in all age groups plays havoc with the skin of not only of women, but also of men, who are becoming beauty conscious these days.” These are the findings of a study on “Adverse reactions to cosmetics” done by the Department of Dermatology, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital.

Dr Sarvjit Kaur, a third-year resident doctor in the Dermatology Department, conducted the study on patients who visited the skin OPD of the DMCH for the treatment of various skin diseases caused by the use of low quality cosmetics.

The study was done on patients between the age group of 11 years and 56 years. The female to male ratio was 1.7:1. The allergic ingredient in the cosmetics was detected with the help of patch testing. It was found that the major allergent in most of the cases was in hair dyes followed by lipsticks, soaps, shaving creams, face creams, nail enamels, hair oils and eye make-ups.

The findings suggest that people using hair dyes should be very careful in selecting them. Medicated shampoos and soaps should not be used without the dermatologists’ prescription. Phenols and adhesives at the back of a bindi could cause a white patch at the place of application.

The interesting finding was that nail polish particles do not develop any reaction to nails but could damage eyelids. The most disappointing fact that the study revealed was that most of the people did not pay much attention towards mild to moderate reactions and rather went for self- treatment, which was wrong.

It was suggested that there should be some regulations constituted to keep a check on the production and marketing of cosmetics. Many European countries had framed cosmetic regulations that forbade the marketing of cosmetic products without proper labelling of its ingredients, batch number, date of manufacturing and expiry precautions to be taken. The company responsible for the introduction of a product in the market made sure that the product was not harmful when used under normal conditions. Manufacturers should also take the opinion of a dermatologist. The study revealed that since rules about cosmetics were made according to the cosmetic regulations rather than drug regulations, government control was very limited, therefore, more public-administered research in the field of adverse reactions to cosmetics was desirable. Dr Sarvjeet Kaur reiterated that people should buy good quality cosmetics after properly scrutinising the label and in case an allergic reaction occurred, a dermatologist should be consulted.
