Teachers to protest on Teachers' Day
From A Correspondent

LUDHIANA, Aug 25 — University and college teachers all over the country have decided to observe Teachers' Day as 'Anti-Betrayal Day' to protest against "the betrayal by the HRD Minister."

This was stated in a press note released by the President of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU), Prof K. B. S. Sodhi. According to the note, members of the union would join the 'satyagrahi' university and college teachers, when they converged on Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi, to court arrest.

It was stated that even though an agreement had been reached between the All-India Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation (AIFUCTO) leaders and the HRD Minister on September 5, 1998, when a 26-day strike had been called off, nothing had been done so far.

Dr Hari Gautam, Chairman, UGC, had given some assurances on October 6, last year, for the implementation of the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) w.e.f. January 1, 1996, according to which, a grant for 14,940 directors of physical education and librarians was to be on a par with lecturers. The dual emolument to the Merit Promotion Scheme and CAS for readers was to be put on end. The union members, however, are disappointed as nothing has been done so far.
