Bandh reflects INLD-BJP rift ROHTAK, Aug 9 — The near total bandh observed by the traders in most towns of Haryana has not only widened the differences between the ruling INLD and its poll ally, the BJP, but has also brought the rift among the Congress leaders to the surface. The call for the statewide bandh was given jointly by the Beopar Mandals led by Mr Lakshmi Chand Gupta and Mr Bajrang Dass Garg to protest against the introduction of Form 38-A and the imposition of professional and other taxes on the trading community. Although the state leadership of the BJP had opposed the bandh call, its activists and supporters actively participated to make the bandh success. According to sources the rank and file of the BJP was feeling suffocated after the INLD started making inroads in the urban areas. That the bandh call had evoked poor response at Panchkula, Narwana, Uchana, Adampur and Bahadurgarh proves that the warring factions within the Congress have reached a point of no compromise even on issues of public interest. Except an isolated incident at Kurukshetra, where an activist of a traders association sustained head-injuries, the bandh passed off peacefully in the state. At Kurukshetra, Mr Prithi Singh was reportedly injured when certain supporters of the local minister allegedly attacked him. The Beopar Mandal Chief, Mr Lakshmi Chand Gupta, condemned that attack on Mr Prithi Singh and further alleged that the supporters of the Kurukshetra MLA had also kidnapped Mr Om Parkash Sharma, also an activist of the traders association at Kurukshetra. Demanding immediate release of the kidnapped person, Mr Gupta demanded action against Mr Ashok Kumar Arora. The state unit of the CPM and CPI have said the widespread impact of today’s Haryana bandh had reflected people’s resentment against the style of functioning of the Chautala government. Reaching
to the bandh, CPM state secretary, Mr Inderjit Singh and CPI Secretary, Mr Raghubir Singh, have in a joint statement claimed that the overwhelming participation of small shopkeepers and small traders was due to unjustified taxes imposed on them. Apart from that, the other major factor for making the bandh a success was the deteriorating law and order situation and the pathetic condition of power supply. According to the Left leaders, the double face of the BJP had once again been exposed over their stand on the bandh. Despite their indifference, the urban people have massively supported and participated in the bandh which proves that the people were equally fed up with the dubious policies of the BJP. |
Chautala assures
adequate power PANIPAT, Aug 9 — The Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, has assured that adequate power supply will be provided in the state despite the power cut from the Naptha power project in Himachal Pradesh and scanty rain during the current monsoon.
The Chief Minister was addressing a meeting of INLD party workers here today. He urged the workers to maintain an atmosphere of brotherhood and cordiality among themselves and asked them not to approach him for transfers of government employees. He promised all-round development would be made in every village of the state during his tenure. The recruitment of constables in the police would be made on merit basis. Mr Chautala also addressed a district officers’ meeting where he lauded the significant role played by officers in implementing the policies and programmes of the government. He urged them to maintain the trust reposed by the people in the government. The fact that the government machinery had given good results despite limited resources proved that it was being run by efficient and dedicated administrators. He said the calibre of the district officers would be judged from the number of people visiting Chandigarh for getting their grievances redressed. |
