BJP dissatisfied with INLD rule: Kataria
From Our Correspondent

SONEPAT, July 10 — Mr Rattan Lal Kataria, MP and chief of the Haryana BJP, said here yesterday that the party was not satisfied with the functioning of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) Government led by Mr Om Parkash Chautala as it was taking important decisions without taking the BJP into its confidence.

Talking to mediapersons here, he said BJP leaders were getting information about the decisions from newspapers and this had caused resentment among party workers. They were pressing the leadership to withdraw support to the Chautala Government.

He disclosed that the leadership was keeping a close watch on the situation and it would take a decision in this regard at an appropriate time.

Mr Kataria also asked Mr Chautala to remember that earlier the BJP had withdrawn its support from the Bansi Lal Government. He maintained that the BJP was a partner of the INLD Government but it was a wrong policy that the INLD Government should take decisions on its own without consulting the BJP. He suggested that a coordination committee should be set up.

He, however, warned that the BJP would not tolerate any attempt to tarnish its image.

Criticising the imposition of taxes, Mr Kataria alleged that industrialists had started shifting their units to other states and this had affected the economy of the state. He also opposed the move to re-introduce octroi and said this move was being opposed by traders and shopkeepers everywhere in the state.

He admitted that there was a power crisis and consumers were badly affected.

The State Government, he said, should take steps to overcome the crisis by purchasing power from other states.

Referring to the delay in the construction of the SYL canal in the Punjab territory, the BJP leader stated he would take up the matter with the Prime Minister for its early solution.Top

Clarification on house tax sought
Tribune News Service

GURGAON, July 10 — A former MLA and senior Congress leader of Haryana, Mr Dharamvir Gabba, yesterday asked the INLD government to give full details on its proposal to restructure the house tax.

In a statement here today the Congress leader also sought clarification from the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, whether his government would levy the house tax under another head as it had reportedly shelved the introduction of a new formula for assessing the house tax in the municipal towns. This was imperative in the context of wide-ranging apprehension among the masses, he added.

Mr Gabba, who represented Gurgaon thrice in the Haryana Assembly, criticised the INLD government for taking policy decisions which aimed at driving a wedge between the rural and urban population of the state. The proposal for introducing a new formula for assessing the house tax was one such move keeping electoral politics in view by the ruling party. The Congress would oppose all such moves.

He charged the state government of going in for mindless imposition of new taxes and increasing the present ones without taking the ground realities in view. Also, the democratic norms were given a go by as the ruling party was unilaterally tampering with the taxes without taking the opposition parties into confidence.

According to him, reports suggest that the government was thinking of increasing the tariff rate. He wondered why the government was making such moves without improving the power supply. The government appeared to be deliberately oblivious of improving the basic amenities to the people. There were areas in Gurgaon which did not receive water for a number of days at a stretch during the last summer. The problem continues in a number of colonies, he added.

He was also critical of the government on the law and order front. The occurrence of crime had increased in the state, particularly in Gurgaon, in the past few days.

Referring to the recent statements of the Deputy Speaker of the state Assembly, Mr Gopi Chand Gehlot, in which several claims of development in the state were made, Mr Gabba said he was misleading the public. Incidentally, Mr Gehlot had defeated Mr Gabba in the last Assembly election in Gurgaon. The Congress leader said instead of making tall claims and writing letters to the Chief Minster on various issues, Mr Gehlot should publicly confess that the present government had failed on all fronts.

The Congress leader demanded that the government should start law classes in Gurgaon.Top

After the procession, the Congress activists gathered on the premises of the district courts and organised a public meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Hooda, while referring to the anti-people policies, of the Chautala government said no section of the society was satisfied with his government’s performance.

Mr Chautala came to power by making attractive promises to the people contrary to his election promises, Mr Hooda alleged.

He further alleged that the Chautala government was fabricating false cases against his adversaries with a feeling of revenge.

He said the cases registered against Mr Randeep Singh Surjewala, President of the All-India Youth Congress, and Mr Anand Singh Dangi, a senior leader of the party, were motivated by a feeling of political revenge.

He said the Chautala government had registered false cases against the BKU leaders on the basis of wrong allegations of instigating the farmers not to pay the pending electricity bills.

Mr Hooda said before coming to power, Mr Chautala talked of completing the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal soon but after assuming power, he had put the matter into cold store.

He said the government was following a policy of discrimination in the matter of the distribution of the canal water.Top
