UT plans massive tree plantation drive
CHANDIGARH, July 3 — The failure of the initial bougainvillaea drive along Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg notwithstanding, the Chandigarh Administration has chalked out a massive plantation drive to extend green cover to Phase II and III sectors besides filling the gaps in Phase I sectors.

FIRs, mishap details by post
CHANDIGARH, June 3 — FIR by post! Sounds too good to be true, but in a first of its kind in this region, the Chandigarh Police will start posting copies of the FIR to the complainants by post from next week.

Six more PG courses at GMCH
CHANDIGARH, July 3— The Panjab University Syndicate has approved six more postgraduate courses in Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. This is in addition to the five M.S. and M.D. courses which have been approved by the Syndicate early this year.

‘Officials in ST evasion racket’
SAS NAGAR, July 3 — The sales tax evasion racket detected by the Minister of State for Excise and Taxation, Punjab, at Lakhnour checkpost last Wednesday has taken a new turn, with a suspect in the case, during his questioning by the police, naming certain senior officials of the Department of Excise and Taxation for being allegedly involved in it.

HUDA dustbins on cricket ground
PANCHKULA, July 3 — One corner of the Sector 5 cricket ground has become the "official" dumping ground for broken, rusted dustbins belonging to the Haryana Urban Development Authority. Besides, it is an eyesore and has been a permanent fixture for over one year in the absence of any other location to dump the discarded bins.

Surprise visitor at Estate Office
CHANDIGARH, July 3 — The counters vacated by shifting of the vehicle registration branch and learner licence branch would be utilised for reorganisation of the Estate Office work. The Tehsildar’s office performing public dealing work would be shifted to these counters. Similarly, public dealing work of the SDO, Building Department, would also be shifted to this office and the present office the department will be used for record room purpose.

CHANDIGARH, July 3 — A Victoria Cross winner of World War II, Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Ganju Lama, passed away at Gangtok on July 1, a statement issued here said.

Three held for trespass
CHANDIGARH, July 3 — The police has arrested three persons, including a woman, for trespassing and beating a resident of Ram Darbar.According to police sources, Ms Murti Devi alleged that Arjun, Bobby and Saroj, residents of the same locality, trespassed her house, beat her up and criminally intimidated her. A case under Sections 452, 323, 506 and 34 of the IPC, has been registered.

Children eager to attend school after vacation
CHANDIGARH, July 3 — School days are back again exclaimed children going to school after a long vacation. After a long summer vacation, the schools in the city reopened today. Wearing new dresses and with a bright look on their faces, the students looked eager to meet their class mates.

CHANDIGARH, July 3 — The results of the entrance tests for the master in computer applications and postgraduate diploma in computer science and applications conducted on June 6 this year have been declared.

Gunman’s appeal dismissed
CHANDIGARH, July 3 — The appeal filed by Raj Kumar, gunman of the UT former Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Sumedh Singh Saini, against the order passed by an Additional Sessions Judge convicting him for the murder of his wife and daughter, was today dismissed by Mr Justice H.S. Bedi and Mr Justice A.S. Garg of the Punjab and Haryana High Court here.

Sec 145 imposed at disputed land
KHARAR, July 3 — Mr Devinder Singh, Sub Divisional Magistrate Kharar, has imposed section 145, Cr PC around the disputed land of dargah of Manakpur Sharif village and has appointed Mr Malkiat Singh, Tehsildar, Kharar, as Receiver of this disputed land. The orders were passed by the court of the SDM, Kharar, on June 30. As per orders, the Tehsildar and the Naib Tehsildar of Majri, Mr Balwinder Singh, took possession of the disputed land yesterday.

GMCH Geriatrics Dept now open
CHANDIGARH, July 3 — The Geriatrics Department of the Sector 32 Government Medical College and Hospital is open every Saturday now. This department is the first of its kind in the region, with only the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi having a special OPD for senior citizens.

Pakistan win circle-kabaddi Punjab tour opener
CHANDIGARH, July 3 — The Pakistan circle-kabaddi team played the first match of its Punjab tour at the Phase VI Shivalik Public School in SAS Nagar today. More than 3,000 persons, most of whom had come from the satellite towns of the city, witnessed the hour-long thriller. Pakistan beat India, 59-46, after leading, 32-21, at the halftime.

CHANDIGARH, July 3 — Mr YN Vohra has been unanimously elected Secretary of the Chandigarh Hockey Association to fill the vacancy caused by the death of its Founder Secretary, Surinder Nath Vohra.

CHANDIGARH, July 3 — The air of the DGP durbar, which has now become a regular feature of Mr SPS Rathore’s itinerary, is unmistakably feudal. MC to channelise nullah
LAKHNOUR (SAS NAGAR), July 3 — The SAS Nagar Municipal Council has come to the rescue of residents of Lakhnour village who have been suffering for the past several years on account of dirty water nullah passing through the village. The villagers who had almost lost the hope of living a healthy life due to toxic waste being discharged into the nullah.
