MC takes charge of sanitation in
Sectors 70, 71 SAS NAGAR June 26 In a significant development, the sanitation of Sectors 70 and 71 was today taken over by the local Municipal Council. The sanitation of the two new sectors, being developed by Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA), was in a state of sheer neglect as there was no sanitation staff with the authority. In fact, residents of the two sectors had been complaining about heaps of garbage scattered all around in the absence of garbage bins. Being populated sectors, the non-removal of garbage has become an eyesore for the residents. The green signal to hand over the sanitation of the two sectors was taken recently at a meeting between the Chief Administrator of the PUDA and the Administrator of the local Municipal Council. The Administrator of the council said 30 daily-wagers, engaged recently the council, were today sent to Sectors 70 and 71 to start the sanitation drive. Sources in PUDA said sanitation of Sector 71 had been handed over to private hands on more than two occasions for limited periods in the past, but the experiment was not successful. The council also decided to take over the maintenance of street-lighting and roads in Sector 71 from PUDA. An official of the council said other essential services like water, sewerage, storm water drainage and horticulture were not being transferred to the council as there were certain problems. The council had not evinced interest in taking over essential services of Sector 71 as these were under development. |
MC panel
against stalls
in open spaces CHANDIGARH June 26The Finance and Contract Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh(MCC) today recommended that no stalls should be allowed to be put up in the open spaces near Sector 17 Plaza and the Sector 22 market during the festivals like Divali and Dasehra. This was recommended at a meeting of the committee in view of the overcrowding and probability of some untoward incident in the prime commercial locations. However, members were of the view that Circus Ground in Sector 17, Nehru Park in Sector 22 and Exhibition Ground in Sector 34 should be earmarked for putting up stalls on special festive occasions. The recommendation would come for approval at one of the meetings of the House in coming days. The committee okayed the rates recommended by the tender committee for the fabrication of three newly-purchased water tenders and one emergency multi-purpose tender in addition to the estimates for re-fabrication of the two water tenders. An amount of Rs 22 lakh would be spent on strengthening the machinery. An estimate of Rs 2.6 lakh to upgrade the existing EPBAX system installed at the civic body building in Sector 17 here was also approved.
