PU to start new BSc(hon) course CHANDIGARH June 26 Panjab University is introducing a BSc (honours school) course in mathematics and computing in the Centre for Advanced Studies in Mathematics (Department of Mathematics) from this session. According to a university communique, the student seeking admission to the course should be a plus two with mathematics as one of the subjects and must have appeared in the Common Entrance Test (CET) and have obtained 18 marks (12 in case of SC/St candidates) in mathematics. The last date for the submission of application forms is June 30. For ordinary seats the applications should be addressed to the Coordinator, Joint Admission Cell in the Department of Biochemistry and for NRI-sponsored or NRI seats it should be addressed to the Chairman, Department of Mathematics. The students trained under this programme will be trained to handle all kinds of computing jobs. Apart from being job oriented, the course will cater to both computer and mathematics streams. The students holding a degree in this course will be eligible for MSc (honours school) in mathematics. The number of seats in the course is 15. The students admitted to
BSc (honours school) in the Department of Mathematics are
eligible for the scholarships of the National Board of
Higher Mathematics, the Department of Atomic Energy,
Government of India. Each scholarship of Rs 700 per month
carries a book grant of Rs 1000 per annum. |
CBSE PMT
results not received CHANDIGARH June 26 The parents and students who wanted to see the result of the entrance test conducted by CBSE for admission to All India medical and dental colleges had to face a disappointment today as the local CBSE office had not received the details of the result. Hundreds of students and parents had gathered outside the CBSE office asking for the rank of their children in the exam. But to no avail. It was told by the sources that the Head Office did not dispatch any communication regarding the result. They were not even able to get a satisfactory answer to their queries. A list of roll numbers published in a national daily was displayed on a notice board which was torn to pieces by the parents and students willing to know about the result. When this correspondent approached the Assistant Secretary, Mr BN Gupta posing as a commoner, he pointed out that the office had displayed the result on the board. When the correspondent went to see the list on display, it was already torn adding to the woes of parents and students. Mr Yog Raj Sachdeva, the
Regional Officer, when contacted on the phone
said,"The CBSE had already been posted on the
internet and many newspapers were carrying the lists of
the result. So there was no need for the regional office
to display the result.We had told the parents to get the
result from there only." |
Entrance test dates clash CHANDIGARH June 26 The dates of MBA entrance test, conducted by Punjab Technical University,(PTU), Jalandhar and Punjabi University, Patiala, have clashed. The Punjabi University is scheduled to hold its MBA entrance on July 3 and the group discussions for admission to MBA by PTU also fall between July 3 and 5. The parents of the students have requested the PTU authorities to change the dates of group discussions. Further the parents have
brought to the notice of PTU authorities that the
schedule of the group discussions published by the
university in a newspaper skipped the schedule for roll
numbers starting from 2006 to 2205. |
Kataria sent in judicial custody CHANDIGARH June 26 Subhash Kataria, president, Traders Association, Sector 17, was arrested by the police today and produced before Duty Magistrate Pushvinder Singh for allegedly threatening Ms Ranjana Shahi, councillor, MCC, and disrupting the proceedings of the House of the corporation on June 15. A case was registered
against him after a complaint filed by the Secretary of
the corporation to the police. Earlier, he moved an
application for anticipatory bail which was rejected on
June 24. Today he was sent in judicial custody by the
Judge till July 9. According to sources he is likely to
move the bail application tomorrow. |
Plays mark drug de-addiction day CHANDIGARH June 26 Street plays in slums marked the celebration of International Day Against Drug Abuse. Yet another task undertaken by the Catholic Church, Sector 19-A, in collaboration with Lala Lajpat Rai Bhavan authorities, was a drug de-addiction camp which was coordinated by father Dominic Bosco. Nearly 235 persons participated in the camp and they were educated on the ill effects of drug abuse through the medium of street plays. During on-the-spot check-up on the occasion, Dr Rajinder Singh and Dr Avinash Jolly treated 87 patients. Medicines were also administered to patients free of cost. A talk on drug abuse was also delivered by Mr S.D. Kalia, a social activist. Earlier, while inaugurating the camp Bishop Gerald John Mathias said that such camps would also be organised in other slums of the city. He said efforts to rehabilitate the addicts would also be made simultaneously. A camp was also at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. The patients required immediate attention were admitted to the hospital. To create awareness in public, a poster competition was also organised and the winners were given prizes by Dr V.K. Kak, Director-cum- Principal, of the college. The first prize was bagged by Mr Bharat Sindhwani, while second and third by Neeti Vashisht and Mr Davinder Singh, respectively. Consolation prizes were won by Ms Seema and Mr Amarinder Singh. KHARAR: A district-level function was held in the local Civil Hospital, with the cooperation of the Rotary Club Kharar. Dr Rajinder Singh Saggu, Civil Surgeon, Ropar, presided over the function. The Deputy Commissioner, Ropar, Mr Gurinder Singh Grewal, send a message through the Civil Surgeon and warned the chemists and unregistered RMPs not to sell intoxicants to youth. Dr Paramjit Singh, a senior resident doctor of the PGI, Chandigarh, explained to the public regarding drug addiction and its treatment. He said the PGI was running a drug de-addiction clinic in the local Civil Hospital on every Saturday. Earlier, Dr Sukhwant Singh Dhanoa, Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, welcomed the chief guest. PANCHKULA: The Drug Awareness Council for Children run by the District Council for Child Welfare organised an awareness programme in Sector 4, on Monday. Attended by 30 anganwadi workers, the programme had a talk on creating awareness of drugs by the project in charge in addition to a short film on various aspects of drug abuse. Also, a sticker pasting campaign was organised at the general bus stand in Sector 5 in which stickers against drug abuse were pasted onto 50 state-run buses to create awareness among the masses. |
Cultural function of Press Club CHANDIGARH June 26 The Chandigarh Press Club, in collaboration with the Besten Foundation, will organise a cultural evening at Tagore Theatre on June 29 at 11.30 a.m. Earlier, the function was to be held on the club premises on June 28. Dance sequences, short
play, skit and solo presentations will be presented by
children who have been attending the workshop, which
started in the club on June 15. |
