Fiji military, rebels hold meeting

SUVA, Fiji, June 1 — Coup leader George Speight and Fiji’s new military ruler achieved a breakthrough today that could lead to the release of hostages, including the deposed ethnic Indian Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, officials on both sides of the crisis said.

India-Lanka talks ‘soon’
COLOMBO, June 1 — Sri Lanka will start talks with India “very soon” to explore the possibility of involving New Delhi in any negotiations with LTTE to find an amicable solution to the ethnic conflict in Jaffna peninsula.

NEW DELHI, June 1 — An Indian Airlines plane, on resumption of flights to and from Kathmandu after a five-month suspension following hijacking of a plane to Kandahar, landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport this evening.

Rocket attack on security camp
SRINAGAR, June 1 — Sixteen persons including 11 militants, three Bangladeshi nationals and a security jawan were killed as militants today fired a rocket at a security camp and setoff a grenade inside the headquarters of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry.

Police ends hostage drama
WASSERBILLIG (LUXEMBOURG), June 1 — The police launched an assault today to free 28 hostages, including 25 children, held by a lone gunman in a daycentre in Luxembourg, the police said.

Release of Romesh Sharma ordered
NEW DELHI, June 1 — Romesh Sharma, alleged frontman of Dubai-based underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, was today ordered to be released unconditionally by a Delhi court in a CBI case relating to fraudulent procurement of passport for Dawood’s mother to help her flee the country soon after the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.
