800-kv
transmission system inaugurated JAMMU, May 29 — The country’s first 800 kv Kishenpur-Moga transmission system was inaugurated at Kishenpur in Jammu district today. The transmission system has been built at a cost of Rs 456.98 crore in a record time of 57 months by the Power Grid Corporation. The transmission lines have been laid over a distance of 275 km, which would facilitate transmission of electricity from Jammu to Moga in Punjab and the vice-versa. According to the Chairman and Managing Director of the corporation, Mr R.P. Singh, work on the second Kishenpur-Moga circuit had also been taken in hand and the two circuits would cost over Rs 938.48 crore. Inaugurating the circuit the Union Minister of Power, Mr P.R. Kumaramanglam, said there was a need for increasing power generation in Jammu and Kashmir when the state had the potential of generating 15,000 mw. He said so far the total generation had touched 1170 mw, which was a fraction of the total generating capacity. Mr Kumarmangalam said in the next plan a provision was being made for raising the power generation by another 900 mw. He said it was strange that when it had been established that hydel projects having the capacity of 3,500 mw could be set up work should have been initiated on it. He stated that on June 10 a high-level meeting in Srinagar was to be held where issues related to increase in power generation would be discussed and schemes finalised. The Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, said because of paucity of funds and lack of central assistance on several power projects the construction work could not be started. He said had the Centre given counter guarantees and released additional funds during the past several years the state would have not only been self-sufficient in power but it could have exported electricity to the northern grid. Dr Abdullah said the Government of India had given a raw deal to Jammu and Kashmir by having signed the Indus water treaty with Pakistan in 1960 which had imposed restrictions on the optimum utilisation of water from its rivers for generating power. In this connection he referred to Uri and Salal projects. He said the Uri project had the capacity of generating 480 mw but in winter the total generation touched 35 mw. The Salal project could generate 100 mw against the installed capacity of 600 mw in summer. He praised the role of the power grid in building a sound transmission system and added that when the militants blasted the transmission system in Kashmir it was the power grid engineers who had restored power transmission within a few days. Dr Abdullah blamed Pakistan for having wrecked the economy of Jammu and Kashmir by exporting terrorism to the state. He said Pakistan should not mistake India’s quest for peace as its weakness. He said nothing would emerge out of the talks with the Hurriyat Conference leaders. The Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, expressed concern over the prolonged load shedding in the Jammu region. The Chief Minister announced that he would release Rs 5 crore in favour of the Power Development Department for purchasing new transformers which could ensure regular power supply. |
