Liberty group staff gherao MLA KARNAL, May 6 More than 1,000 shoe manufacturers and labourers attached to the Liberty Group gheraoed the local MLA, Mr Jai Parkash Gupta, at his residence here today to protest against the alleged "excesses" being committed by the Haryana Government against the company. The demonstrators blocked traffic near the residence of the MLA and raised slogans against the state government. They complained to Mr Gupta against raids on the Liberty Group by the Excise and Taxation Department, Labour Department, Haryana Vidyut Parsaran Nigam, the Anti-Pollution Board and various other agencies. The demonstrators alleged that due to these successive and uncalled for raids the group was planning to declare a lock out in its units. Work in most of the units was at a standstill and all this had adversely affected the employees and workers and they were on the verge of starvation. They urged the MLA to support their cause. Mr Gupta told TNS that he had promised the workers to take up their case with the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala. Mr Gupta also asked the agitators to remain peaceful. However, during the gherao no policeman was present on the scene to prevent any untoward incident. The police arrived on the scene after the agitators had left Mr Guptas house. Later, the protesters took out a procession and met the Deputy Commissioner of Karnal. They complained about ditches dug along the road in front of the manufacturing units of the Liberty Group at Gharaunda. The Deputy Commissioner is reported to have deputed the SDM to look into the matter. Meanwhile, according to sources, Mr Chautala has called a meeting at his residence at 2 p.m. tomorrow to sort out the Liberty Group issue. Mr Chautala is learnt to have also invited public representatives to the meeting. The Beopar Mandal has also condemned the action of the government against the Liberty Group. According to sources in view of the sensitive nature of the case, the government has deputed Mr Yudhvir Singh, Joint Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Faridabad, to find out the truth about tax evasion and other alleged malpractices being committed by the company and its dealers. Mr Yudhvir Singh visited Karnal and inspected the records as well as premises of Liberty dealers. Meanwhile, owners of the group, including Mr D.P. Gupta, Mr P.D. Gupta, Mr Raj Bansal, who had been granted anticipatory bail till May 9 by the Additional District and Sessions Judge, Karnal. The owners had sought
anticipatory bail as the Karnal police had registered a
case against them under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC
on a complaint by the Excise and Taxation Department. |
City Centre in utter neglect YAMUNANAGAR: The City Centre in the heart of the city has turned to be the most neglected place by the District Administration as well as by the Municipal Council, Yamunanagar. The centre was established in 1983 at the cost of Rs 2.33 crore. The people used it for morning and evening walk. It also provided amusement to children. Thousands of old people used to have their morning and evening walk and sit there to enjoy pollution-free air. But now stray animals are seen roaming around. When this reporter visited the complex, he was informed by the people that no proper care has been taken by the Municipal Councils staff. It is alleged that people around this complex throw garbage in the complex. It results in heaps of garbage all around. There was provision for a traffic park in this complex, which was inaugurated by Mr Rajesh Sharma in 1993, the then Labour and Employment Minister, Haryana. Now the traffic park gives an ugly look because congress grass has grown. At the time of construction it was decided that one head constable and three constables will be deployed in the complex round the clock to give training to people regarding traffic rules. It may be added when the traffic park was constructed the students from educational institutions used to visit the park to learn traffic rules. Now it is noticed that half of the City Centre has turned into a part of a nullah. The stadium which is adjoining the City Centre is also in bad shape. At the same place a number of national festivals like Republic Day and Independence Day functions used to be held, but now it gives a barren look because it is not properly maintained, allegedly by the Municipal Council, Yamunanagar. It is feared if things do not improve there is fear of epidemic because neither is there any drainage nor any safai karamchari. There was provision of a lake in the City Centre earlier when there was a facility of boating for the general public. The Municipal Council used to earn Rs 50000/- annually from this facility but now there is no water. The Samaj Hitkari Sangathan has demanded that the City Centre should be handed over to some educational institution so that it can be used for students. Even the Municipal Council can generate revenue from the same. About half a dozen shops
which were constructed by the Municipal Council,
Yamunanagar, have not been rented out because there is
hardly any scope for customers. It is alleged even the
police also never bothers to visit this complex resulting
which a number of anti-social elements frequent this
complex. |
