Computer must from Class IX: CM ROHTAK, April 15 The Haryana Government has decided to introduce computer as a compulsory subject from Class IX from the coming academic session. Announcing this, the Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala, said that the objective of introducing Information Technology in the school curriculum was to create employment opportunities for the youth. He said that the new education policy was being formulated and a committee under the chairmanship of Education Minister Bahadur Singh has been set up for this purpose. Laying the foundation stone of C.R. College of Engineering, C.R. Public School and B.C.A. Building Jat College here last evening, Mr Chautala said that the insurance scheme for the livestock had already been introduced. Fifty per cent of the premium money would be borne by the owner and the rest by the government. The educational institutions would be constructed by the Jat Education Society at a cost of Rs 13.50 crore. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the Harki Devi Girls Hostel, constructed at a cost of Rs 57.36 lakh. Expressing concern over the continuous decline in land holdings and repeated loss of cash crops like cotton, jowar, bajra and paddy due to infection by diseases, the Chief Minister said that the government has decided to increase the area under sugarcane so that farmers may not suffer losses. Mr Chautala said that his government was alive to the problem of availability of potable drinking water in the state, particularly in the rural areas. His government, he said, had initiated necessary measures to provide at least 70 litres of potable drinking water per capita per day in the coming one-and-a-half year. For this purpose, new water works were being set up in the rural areas. He said that two new sugar mills were being set up in the state and if needed, more such mills would be set up. Haryana had given the highest sugarcane price of Rs 110 per quintal as compared to the neighbouring states, he claimed. A new agricultural policy was also in the offing under which preference would be given to horticulture, floriculture and dairy development, he told the audience. Mr Chautala said that Rs 20 crore had been earmarked for making Haryana free from floods. His government would not hesitate in allocating more funds for saving the people from floods. He said that the water courses in the state would be constructed and repaired at the government expenses and alignment of drains would be corrected to enable the canal water to reach the tail-end. Lauding the role of the
Jat Education Society in imparting quality education, the
Chief Minister said that the polytechnic building would
be repaired by the government and also announced setting
up of an ayurvedic dispensary on the premises of Jat
education institutes. He further announced 200 per cent
matching grant for setting up of women technical
institute. |
Ambedkar function poorly
managed ROHTAK, April 15 The Haryana Guru Ravidas Samaj Mahasabha has alleged that the celebration of Dr B.R. Ambedkars birth anniversary in the town was poorly managed and left an ugly impression on the gathering. Mr Ram Mehar, president of the mahasabha, said Mr Ashok Arya, president, Dr Ambedkar Students Front, Maharshi Dayanand University got clearance to organise the celebration function on the recommendation of Brig O.P. Chaudhary, a former Vice Chancellor of the university. Mr Ram Mehar alleged that Mr Arya was an expelled student and even his entry on the campus was banned. He said Dr Baldev Mehra, a reader in the university joined Mr Arya as the former was interested in the post of Pro Vice Chancellor in the university. Mr Ram Mehar said the Dalit employees used to celebrate this function with great fervour but, he claimed they were not involved seriously in the function this time due to the selfish working of its organisers. He alleged that even the Dalit leaders including Dr Sushil Indora, MP, Mr Amar Singh, Mr Daryao Singh and Ms Sarita Narayan, all MLAs, present on the stage were not given time to speak at the function. He informed the demands
were not accepted in a straight forward manner and,
hence, it threw the Dalit community in a state of
bewilderment. |
SDO (Phones), assistant held KURUKSHETRA, April 15 Following the arrest of two persons, the police here claims to have busted a two-member gang which allegedly was involved in making illegal ISD calls for their private customers through the local telephone exchange. The police arrested an S.D.O. (Sub-Divisional Officer) and an R.S.A. (Repeater Station Assistant red-handed while putting through seventh and eighth co axial circuits of Bhaadson village mini telephone exchange from the U.H.F. (Ultra High Frequency) room of the telephone exchange. Stating this here today, the district police chief Mr Desraj Singh said that S.D.O. Krishan Kumar and his accomplice R.S.A. Som Nath were nabbed red-handed during a special raid when both of them were engaged in making illegal ISD calls by bolting co-axial room from inside at the telephone exchange. Mr Singh said that as per rules, the entry to the co-axial room after 5 p.m. was prohibited. Moreover, whole of the telephone exchange system was in working process without fault and thus the entry to that room was illegal he added. Mr Singh further added
that after arresting both of them under Section 420
I.P.C. and getting police remand, the police had started
its interrogation to know about their number of other
accomplices, if any, and since how long, the gang had
been working. |
Cantonment board to run public
school AMBALA , April 15 For the first time, a cantonment board is going to run a public school. The cantonment board authorities here are all set to make a foray into qualitative education with Roots Cantonment Public School. The school will be locally managed by the cantonment authorities under the aegis of the Western Command Chandi Mandir. The Cantonment Executive Officer, Mr S Shal, told TNS that the broad aim of setting up Roots is to provide an additional avenue for qualitative education to the people of Ambala. The overall objective being the development of the personality of child with special emphasis on physical and athletic development, honing of sporting skills, proficiency in communication skills, development of reasoning ability and imbibing of moral values, he said. The curriculum would be based on the CBSE pattern and in the case of the primary cases the emphasis would be on the play-way method based on notions like Education through entertainment and enterprise. Sub Area Commander would
be the President of the governing board and the
Cantonment Executive Officer of Cantonment Board, Ambala
would be the Secretary. In addition, the governing board
would also have eminent people connected with education
to provide creative inputs from time to time, he said. |
Govt schools to be made more
effective AMBALA, April 15 The Principal Secretary of Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Vishnu Bhagwan, today said that a proposed law on private schools had been sent for presidential assent. Mr Bhagwan said to make government schools more effective, the state government is planning decentralisation by allowing Gram Panchayats, Zila Parishads and Nagar Parishads to participate in schools functioning, a release said. He said the state government would make efforts to fill vacant posts of teacher in high and senior secondary schools. To improve employment opportunities, the government is also going to introduce industry-related courses in government schools. Mr Bhagwan gave away prizes to students at Jain Girls Senior Secondary School, Jain Model School and Lord Mahavir Public School at their annual function. Prizes were given to 217 students and seven teachers. Principal Nutan Suri
spoke at length about the achievements of the schools and
the future plans. President of Shri Digamber Jain Sabha,
Mr I.K. Jain, said efforts were on to improve the
schools. |
Ex-Major crushed to death YAMUNANAGAR, April 15 One person was crushed to death by a road-metal laden truck in a crowded market here today. Irate mob disrupted traffic for few hours and raised slogans against the Haryana Police for permitting trucks in no-entry area. According to information received here today at 11 a.m. a tuck carrying road metal also without number plate was going on the Yamunanagar Jagadhri main road, and it lost control and hit a person, who was retired Major of Indian Army Mr Kashmiri Lal Mehta. It is reported that after the incident the truck driver ran away. Major (retd.) Kashmiri Lal Mehta was resident of Shashtri colony here. People collected there and they raised slogans against the police. Police officials reached the site after hearing the news and pacified the crowd. People demanded that
heavy vehicles should not be allowed to more in no-entry
areas. |
Nakoda incident: Hooda seeks
probe CHANDIGARH, April 15 Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, MLA and President of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee(HPCC), has demanded an inquiry into the incident of alleged harassment of one Mr Amolak and his German wife by some miscreants at the Kala Titar tourist complex at Nakoda village in Sirsa district last week. An HPCC press note, quoting Mr Hooda, stated that from the statement of Mr Amolak, published in the press, it appeared that the culprits had the backing of the ruling party. " Instead of offering justice to the suffering couple, they are being pressurised to withdraw the complaint, which makes the role of the police suspicious", the statement said. Mr Hooda said that if
such an incident could take place in the home district of
the Chief Minister, the law and order situation in the
rest of the state could easily be imagined. |
Steps to check ticketless
travel SONEPAT, April 15 Haryana Roadways has taken a series of measures to check ticketless travel and mobilise resources to increase its income. Mr H.C. Jain, general manager of the Sonepat depot, told mediapersons here today that the depot had earned a record revenue of Rs 9.21 crore during the past five months despite the fact that the number of buses was much less to meet the rush. The number of buses in the depot, he said, was 207 and its fleet utilisation rose to 98 per cent which was the highest in the state. He also claimed that the number of breakdowns had declined to only 18 and the same situation persisted in the case of accidents. Mr Jain further stated
that the depot had earned a profit of Rs 9.05 lakh during
the month of March this year. |
HPCC meeting on April 18 CHANDIGARH, April 15 A meeting of the general body of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee will take on April 18 in the HPCC office here, a Congress party press note stated today. The issues which will figure in the meeting are, deterioration of the law and order situation in Haryana, the recent hike in kerosene and LPG prices and withdrawal of subsidies on fertiliser and diesel, and the proposed review of the Constitution by the BJP-led government. The meeting will be
attended by Mr Motilal Vora, AICC General Secretary, who
looks after the party affairs in Haryana, the press note

Three of family die in mishap SONEPAT, April 15 Three members of a family were killed on the spot when the car in which they were travelling collided with a canter on the G.T. road near Bahalgarh Chowk, 10 km form here today. The victims have been identified as Mr Satinder Singh (45), Mrs Surinder Kaur (40) and Mr Jaspreet Singh (12). All victims belonged to Jhilmil Colony, Delhi. Four other occupants of the car, all children, however, escaped unhurt. |
One killed in accident KAITHAL, April 15 One person was killed and four persons, including a woman and two children, were injured in a road accident at the old Patiala byepass here this afternoon. The accident occurred
when a private bus and a truck rammed into each other.
The truck driver, Ram Kumar (48) of Sharu Khari, died on
the spot and the bus driver, Manga Ram, Chabili Bai (60),
Lalit (12) and another child, Ravi, who received injuries
were admitted to the Civil Hospital, here. The police has
registered a case against the bus driver. |
Fast in protest against
divorces AMBALA, April 15 Mr Kewal Sharma, who claims to be a member of an organisation called the Chemical Institute of Canada, today said that he would fast to pray against divorces which adversely affect children. Mr Sharma said that he would fast near Naurian Mandir in Ambala City. I will be sitting on fast alone but others are welcome to join me in a attempt to stop divorces, which take a toll on children who are not at fault. He said the divorce rate
had been steadily increasing, affecting society on the
whole. |
