celebrations of Panth KAITHAL, April 9 The Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala, said that the tercentenary celebrations of the Khalsa Panth should have been celebrated all over the country to give a befitting tribute to the supreme sacrifices made by Guru Gobind Singh for the sake of entire humanity. He said that the sacrifices by three generations of Guru Gobind Singh were unparalleled in the history. Mr Chautala was talking to mediapersons at Ujhana village, 5 km from here at the residence of local MLA, Mr Leela Ram. He said that the state government will soon declare its new education policy, in which special emphasis will be laid on making the education job-oriented and from class ninth computer education will be introduced in schools in big way so that the youths could be absorbed by the big industrial houses. While expressing satisfaction over the power situation in the state Mr Chautala said that it was quite satisfactory and now the consumers, especially the farmers have started realising that regular power supply was more important than the free power. He said that more and more consumers were coming forward to clear their power bills. He warned that power theft cases would be taken up seriously and action will follow against the erring consumers and any employee found involved in promoting power theft will be strictly dealt with. The Chief Minister reiterated that he has directed the Deputy Commissioners to take immediate action against the encroachers of public lands in urban and rural areas and got the encroached land vacated from their illegal occupants. He said that if any encroacher belonged to his party even he will not be spared. The Chief Minister said that back door recruitment has been banned, but the need based recruitment through the Service Selection Board and the Haryana Public Service Commission will continue as usual. Mr Chautala said that all flood prevention measures would be taken and the officials of the Irrigation Department have been directed to take help from the local people while formulating flood prevention schemes, as the local people were well aware of the natural flow of the waters. The Chief Minister
declared that the road repairs were in full swing and all
the roads in the state will be repaired before the onset
of the rainy season. |
Haryana to be flood-free state HISAR, April 9 Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today declared that flood prevention measures would be taken on a war-footing and Haryana would be made a flood-free state. Address a public meeting in Data village, about 50 km from here, the Chief Minister said, the flood prevention measures had already been ordered and would be completed before the monsoon. Data village falls in the Narnaund Assembly segment. Most of the areas gets submerged during the rains and the farmers have to suffer huge losses. He said, the drains and water channels were being desilted on a war-footing. He also assured that water for irrigation would be supplied to farmers in abundant quantity. Mr Chautala suggested to the farmers to switch over to alternative farming, as land holdings were shrinking day by day. He emphasised the need for live stock farming. He appreciated the work done by the management of the "gaushala" here. There are at least 3,000 cows in the local gaushala, which is one of the biggest in the state. He said to encourage farmers to go for livestock farming a Livestock Welfare Board had been constituted. Mr M.S. Ahluwalia, Director, Animal Welfare Board, expressed concern over the decreasing population of cows. He said special focus was being laid in the Mewat region to ensure protection of cows. He pointed out, the number of cows in the state had come down to 15 lakh from 22 lakh in a few years only. Todays rally was

Make society free of polio:
Governor AMBALA, April 9 The Governor of Haryana, Mr Mahabir Prasad, today said polio could strike anyone, irrespective of caste, creed or religion, and it was the responsibility of society to look after the polio-afflicted person. Addressing a gathering at Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantonment, after inspecting a polio surgery camp organised by the Red Cross Society, Rotary Club and the district administration, Mr Mahabir Prasad said society on the whole must undertake social service. Effort must be made to make society polio-free, he added. Another crucial issue was of family planning, he stated. There is a need to revolutionise family planning. It is an issue which is everybodys responsibility. If we fail, the divide between the rich and the poor will continue to increase, he said. The progress of our nation depends to a large extent on family planning and non-governmental organisations can play a vital role in generating awareness on the matter. Family planning, to an extent depends on education and so we must try and impart education to one and all, he said. He pointed out that Prof Amartya Sen had identified the divide between men and women and illiteracy as two major factors for Indias present scenario. We must work in both fields so that we can strengthen it, he stated. For the polio surgery camp, polio specialist Dr Adi Narayan Rao and his team of 15 doctors performed about 250 operations. During a camp organised last year, about 4,000 handicapped persons had been identified and most of them were given tricycles or artificial limbs. About 500 of them were asked to come for the camp today. Warm welcome to Khalsa march KAITHAL, April 9 The Khalsa march organised in connection with the conclusion of the tercentenary Khalsa celebrations today entered Bhagal village of this district from Pehowa, where the Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Haryana, Mr Ram Pal Mazra, Deputy Commissioner, Dr Mahaveer Singh and other dignitaries welcomed it. Later a shobha yatra comprising a convoy of about 100 decorated vehicles reached Kaithal town, where representatives of various religious, social, voluntary organisations besides large number of students with saffron flags in their hands welcomed the shobha yatra. Shopkeepers gherao City Magistrate PANIPAT, April 9 A mob comprising of shopkeepers of Qalander Chowk gheraoed the City Magistrate and officials of the Municipal Committee, forcing them to leave the spot, when they went there to demolish a shop this evening. The shopkeepers obstructed the demolition work and forced the Magistrate to leave without his official vehicle. Later, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Sandeep Garg, reached the spot and served a 48-hour notice to the owner of the shop to demolish it. He also ordered the ASP, Mr Haneef Qureshi, to lodge an FIR against those who had gheraoed the Magistrate and obstructed the work. Mr Garg said the owner of the shop had constructed the shop without getting sanction of the site plan. The DCC said the municipal engineer had two days back served a six-hour notice to the shop owner under Section 235 of the Municipal Act to demolish the shop but the owner did not pay any heed to it. The shopkeepers were
protesting against the demolition of the shop. The crowd,
however, was pacified when the DC placed the facts before
them. |
HPCC chief threatens
agitation ROHTAK, April 9 The Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) chief, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, has warned the state government that his party would launch an agitation if the government used force to recover pending bills of power from farmers. Addressing a public
meeting at the Kiloi Assembly constituency today, Mr
Hooda said the Congress would oppose any move to use
force to recover the bills. He said the INLD supremo, Mr
Om Prakash Chautala, who "promised to provide free
power" before elections now started threatening the
farmers. He said the state government had not fulfilled
its promise of waiving the old-pending bills of the
agriculture sector. |
Neeru wins poster contest AMBALA, April 9 A poster competition was organised at ITI in Ambala city. A student of SA Jain Senior Secondary School, Neeru Saini, won the first prize and the second prize-winner was Mukesh Kumar. A student of PKR Jain School, Vasu Kaushik, won the third prize in the competition which was organised on the occasion of the World Health Day. In the slogan-writing competition, PKR Jain School student Neha Jain won the first prize, while the second position went to Neha Sood. A Nursing School student, Vandita, won the third prize, a press note said. The prizes were given away by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ambala, Mr Mahinder Kumar. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kumar said prevention was better than cure and efforts should be made to generate awareness regarding the ways to prevent several diseases. The Civil Surgeon, Dr
R.K. Patnaik, said people should not take blood from the
banks which had not been given licence by the government.
He said there were 26 licenced blood banks which included
16 government ones, seven private, one of the Red Cross
and two military blood banks. Here, the blood banks are

Mill workers seek bonus,
overtime dues SONEPAT, April 9 Hundreds of workers of M/s B.J. Duplex Board Limited, Narela road, Kundli (Sonepat), affiliated to the Paper Mill Workers Union and UTUC (Lenin Sarani) took out a procession here yesterday in support of their demands for the payment of bonus and overtime dues. The procession was led by Mr Sukesh Tyagi and Mr Balwan Singh, president and general secretary, respectively of the Union Workers were raising slogans against the state government and the management of the factory. The workers held a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioners Office. Six-member delegation, led by the union leaders submitted a charter of demands to Deputy Commissioner and urged him to put pressure on the management. The Deputy Commissioner assured them that he would look into the matter. Earlier, a rally was also addressed by the Union leaders who blamed the management for its failure to accept the workers demands. According to another report, members of the socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) also took out a procession here yesterday in protest against the anti-people and privatisation policies of the Central and state governments. and submitted a memorandum to him. They urged for the

Sonepat police nabs Delhi
gangster SONEPAT, April 9 With the arrest of a Delhi gangster, the Sonepat police today claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of kidnappers and murderers operating in parts of Haryana, Delhi and UP. Mr K.P. Singh, SSP, said here today that the arrested gangster, Vishwa Bandhu Tyagi, was allegedly involved in a number of criminal cases relating to murder, kidnapping and extortion of money. The SSP claimed that the
police had worked out 23 cases of murder, kidnapping and
loot committed by the Tyagi gang in the UP, Delhi and
Sonepat areas during the past few years. Further
investigations were on. |
Relief given to martyrs
kin FARIDABAD, April 9 Mr R.S. Verma, Chief Secretary, Haryana today distributed financial assistance worth Rs 20 lakh among next of kin of two armymen belonging to Faridabad, who were killed in Operation Rakshak in Jammu and Kashmir. The martyrs are Naik Raghbir Singh of Sothi village and Lance Naik Rambir Singh of Siha. While Mrs Memwati and Mrs Ramkali, wife and mother, respectively of Naik Raghbir Singh were given Rs 5 lakh each Mrs Sunita, Wife of Lance Naik Rambir Singh got Rs 5 lakh while Rs 2.50 lakh was given each to Mrs Asrafi (mother) and Mr Balu Ram (father). from Faridabad district were also killed in Operation
Vijay. They are Lance Naik Zakir Husain of Softa, Sep
Virinder Kumar of Mohna, Lance Naik Rajbir Singh, of
Garhi, Lance Naik Sarwan Kumar of Ranipur and Sep Har
Prasad of Faridpur. Next of kin of these soldiers had
already been given an ex-gratia grant of Rs 10 lakh each
by the Haryana Government. |
Thrust on vocational courses
likely PATAUDI (Gurgaon), April 9 The Haryana Government is in the process of formulating a new education policy any the same would be implemented shortly, according to the state Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala. Speaking at a public
function here today, Mr Chautala said the thrust in the
policy would be on vocational courses, especially with
emphasis on information technology related studies. The
leitmotif of the new policy would be creation of
conducive environment and enabling the youth to find
employment after their education. |
