PU students fail to get roll numbers
Rush to collect duplicates as exams begin today
CHANDIGARH April 14 — Students of Panjab University from far and wide whose examinations are scheduled to begin tomorrow have not got roll numbers yet. Full of anxiety with the last-minute tension of exams, they had to stand in the queue to get examination identity cards and admit cards.

Super-speciality hospital gets Punjab Govt nod
SAS NAGAR April 14 — As a major boost to the health sector in the northern region the Punjab Government has given its approval for setting up a 400-bed super speciality hospital by a US-based multi-billion dollar company in the health sector at SAS Nagar.

Karmapa fine, leaves for Dharamsala
CHANDIGARH April 14 — Tibet’s second highest ranking spiritual leader, the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorjee, today left for Dharamsala after doctors at the PGI, discharged him after a complete medical check-up.

CHANDIGARH April 13 — Don't fret if the swimming bug bites you in the middle of winter. Both swimmers and learners have a lot to cheer about since the Chandigarh Administration has cleared the proposal to construct an all weather swimming pool in the city.

Zirakpur's vanishing orchards
ZIRAKPUR April 14 — Work has already started on Silver City, a housing colony set on 60 acres of agricultural land along the Chandigarh-Ambala highway about 2 km from here. The development, which claims to have Punjab Urban Development Authority approval, violates Punjab and Haryana High Court directions forbidding installation of hoardings, sign boards and banners along the highway but, worse than that, the development has so far axed dozens of trees and will spell the death of whole orchards presently flourishing on the site.

Priest charged with kidnapping
CHANDIGARH April 14 — A Sector 35 resident has lodged a complaint alleging that his wife and two daughters have been kidnapped by the priest of a temple in Sector 55.

‘Buyer’ drives away car
SAS NAGAR April 14 — A man drove away a Maruti Esteem car (PB-02-R-8236) while posing as a potential buyer near Sector 70 here today. The man, aged around 30 years, had come to see the car in response to an advertisement of car sale given by its owner, Mr M.S. Kohli, a resident of Phase VII.

Courier company to pay for deficiency
CHANDIGARH April 14 — The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission held a local courier company liable for having acted irresponsibly by not delivering the assignment at the required address and directed it to pay Rs 121 as compensation to the complainant, along with another Rs 200 as costs of litigation incurred by him.

I have learnt from the city’s children: Madhumati
CHANDIGARH April 14 — She is unexpectedly humble for the wealth of experience she holds and one might just mistake her for a woman next door. But her Helen-like looks stick on to your eyes, until you flicker your lashes once again to greet the famous actress of the yesteryears, Madhumati, who was most in news when her dance sequence from the film Talaash (Tere naina talaash karen) was especially extracted to screened at the International Film Festival.

3 ‘stars’ selected
CHANDIGARH April 14 — Twenty young artistes who attended the three-month-long training workshop organised by Ms Madhumati here today were awarded certificates of merit. The workshop, which began in a school in Sector 38 here on January 14, ended as a big success with over 20 children attending the same and taking classes in dance, acting and applied arts.

New Punjabi channel in June
CHANDIGARH April 14 — A new entertainment television channel in Punjabi which is expected to get underway by the first week of June, will have a lot for those with a religious bent of mind. Apart from directly telecasting Gurbani and kirtans from the Golden Temple (with the permission of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee), it will also deal with news in a novel manner.

PANCHKULA April 14 — The Dental Health Awareness Society, a Panchkula-based Organisation, will put up a three-day dental health awareness exhibition at Art Gallery, Chandigarh, from April 16.

CHANDIGARH April 14 — A fine knock of 51 runs in just 30 deliveries by Amarjeet helped the Life Insurance Corporation of India team beat the Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation team by eight wickets in the inaugural Salzer Cup League Cricket Tournament organised by the District Panchkula Cricket Association here at the Sector 5 grounds today.

Corbusier's dreams to travel through city
CHANDIGARH April 14 — To celebrate 50 years of Chandigarh, The Arts Council of Switzerland, the Swiss Embassy in New Delhi and Chandigarh-based Saakaar Foundation has prepared an ambitious project. It includes a travelling exhibition titled A Dream Realised — An Architectural Overview of Ideas that Became Cities. This exhibition shows life and works of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret and their influence on India's modern architecture.
