Daylight murder, robbery in Dera Bassi market
Killers get away with Rs 4,39,581 after gunning down school lab assistant
DERA BASSI, March 3 — A Chandigarh resident was shot dead from close range after being robbed of Rs 4,39,581 in broad daylight by two unidentified turbaned youths at a local market here today.

Security at ISBT beefed up
CHANDIGARH, March 3 — Following the bomb blast in a bus near Sirhind, the Chandigarh Police today tightened its security set-up in and around the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Sector 17. More men have been deployed to carry out search and checking of baggage on board all buses that enter or leave the ISBT.

Additional relief for villagers
CHANDIGARH, March 3 — The Punjab Government has decided to give an additional 25 per cent compensation to the villagers who would agree to give their land for the proposed Anandgarh city. This was stated by Dr Upinder Jit Kaur, Housing and Urban Development Minister, in meeting with the Anandgarh Banao Bhavikh Bachao Sangharsh Committee.

Police team leaves for Jammu on Monday
Chandigarh, March 3 — A team of officers from the local police will leave for Jammu on Monday on a familiarisation study to have a first-hand account about the activities of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) in the troubled state.

Project for orphans runs into trouble

PANCHKULA, March 3 — The ambitious project of establishing a permanent home for the 25-odd orphans residing at Haripur village with the Bal Sadan Association ran into troubled waters late this evening on the eve of the laying of the foundation stone of the building for the inmates.

Bonsai with 70 kinnows
CHANDIGARH, March 3 — Ever heard of about 70 kinnows on a bonsai plant? If not, come to the Sector 18 house of Mr S. S. Sularia. The three-year-old plant, which is in full bloom, has nearly 70 kinnows. And this is not the first time that the tiny plant has yielded fruits in such a large number, as last year it had over 100 fruits, informed Ms Geeta Sularia,wife of Mr Sularia, who spends a considerable time in taking care of a large number of flowers and plants at their house and factory in the Industrial Area of Panchkula.

CHANDIGARH, March 3 — “Punjab is a major player in the Indian art scene, with Punjabis dominating the music and the film world and even arts to some extent today. And I salute the likes of Daler Mehndis who have made their music so popular that not only everybody in the country are dancing to their tunes but even the world outside”. These were some of the sentiments expressed by Dr M.S. Gill, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), today at the Dr M.S. Randhawa Memorial Lecture being held at the Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16. Also present on the occasion today was the creator-director of the Rock Garden, Mr Nek Chand.

GOC-in-C for optimum Budget utilisation
Chandigarh, March 3 — The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, Lt-Gen Vijay Oberoi, has called for optimum utilisation of budget allocation in the command zone. No funds should be surrendered but at the same time quality should not be compromised.

Municipal commissioners told to pay over Rs 8.5 lakh
KALKA, March 3 — The Local Bodies Department, Haryana, has put in deep trouble all 13 sitting Municipal commissioners by issuing a notice of recovery of taxes amounting to Rs 8,66,814 from them. It comes to Rs 66,678 for each commissioner. The commissioners have been issued notice to deposit the said amount.

CHANDIGARH, March 3 — There is bad news for the persons dumping malba at unauthorised places as the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) is likely to impose penalty on them from April 1.

DCLC wants law panel’s report implemented
PANCHKULA, March 3— The District Congress Legal Cell (DCLC) has urged the Union Government to implement the recommendations of the Law Commission’s 120th report. The President of the DCLC, Mr Vijay Bansal, said that the report recommends the appointment of additional judges to expedite the process of justice which has so far not been executed.

CHANDIGARH, March 3 — Three city residents accused of consuming liquor at a public place were sentenced to imprisonment till the rising of the court, besides being fined Rs 100 each, by the UT Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Sant Parkash.

Kidnap bid foiled
CHANDIGARH, March 3 — Alert residents and two policemen yesterday foiled a bid to kidnap a 5-year-old girl from near the 3 BRD area.

CHANDIGARH, March 3 — Convicting a city resident for uttering obscene words at a passing girl, the UT Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Ms Paramvir Nijjar, today sentenced him to simple imprisonment for a month.

CHANDIGARH, March 3— The UT Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Sant Parkash, has issued fresh warrants of arrest against retired Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Chanan Singh in the Kulwinder Singh Kid murder case following a report that his whereabouts were not known.

Bail applications rejected
KHARAR, March 3 — Mrs Neelam Arora, Judicial Magistrate, Kharar, today dismissed the bail application filed by the in-laws of Mrs Talwinder Kaur. They were arrested by the Kharar police on March 1 after registration of case under Section 406/498/506.
