Kabaddi tourney opens

ZIRAKPUR, March 3 — Five Kabaddi matches were held on the first day of the international kabaddi Tournament being organised by the Sher-e-Punjab Sports Club, Zirakpur, here today.

Mr Ravinder Singh Sohi, a former Chairman of Zila Parishad, Patiala, inaugurated the tournament. Mr Jaspal Singh, Chairman of the host club, and sarpanches and residents of surrounding villages were present.

Results of today’s matches are as follows: Nabha Sahab beat Bhago Magra; Bajheri beat Sundran; Jaula Kalan lost to Bhabhat; Noor Kheri beat Manak Majra; and Bhabhat beat Bajheri.Back

 

Athletics meet concludes

CHANDIGARH, March 3 — Bhawani Singh of first year and Karandeep Singh of second year were declared best athletes among boys, while Karamjit Kaur of second year was best athlete among girls on the concluding day of the 39th annual athletics meet of Central Polytechnic , Sector 26, here today.

Dr SK Aggarwal, Director, Technical Education, UT gave away the prizes. He said efforts were being made for placement of students and 1100 industries in the region had been identified. He asked students to go in for self-employment.

The results of the final day were: boys — 110 m hurdles—Bhawani Singh 1, Karandeep Singh 2, Bandhan Preet 3; 400 m—Ajay Sharma 1,Vinod Kumar 2, Randeep Singh 3; high jump—Vinod Kumar 1, Vikram Rathore 2, Ravinder Singh 3; 800 m —Ajay Sharma 1, Jatinder Singh 2, Ranjit Singh 3; javelin throw—Karandeep Singh 1,Gurpreet Singh 2,Vikram 3; 400 m hurdles—Ajay Sharma 1, Vinod Kumar 2, Naresh Thakur 3; 5000 m—Lakhwinder Singh 1, Shiv Pal 2, Naresh Thakur 3; hop step jump—Karandeep Singh 1, Bhawani Singh 2, Jatinder Singh 3; 200 m—Bhawani Singh 1, Annu Millu 2, Arvinder Singh 3; girls—long jump—Karamjit Kaur 1, Puneet 2, Anjna 3; discus throw—Gurpreet 1, Neetu 2, Monika 3; shot put—Neetu 1, Prachi 2,Gurpreet 3 ; 100 M —Karamjit Kaur 1, Anjna 2, Puneet 3.

Qualifying rounds begin

CHANDIGARH, March 3 — The second division National Football League qualifying rounds began at Football Stadium, Sector 17, here today.

Out of the four teams which confirmed their participation, all except J & K Club, Jammu, arrived for this three-day meet. Only one match could be played today Lions Club, Ambala, and Youngsters Club, played a goalless draw.

The players seemed exhausted due to the scorching heat. The winner of these matches will qualify for the NFL league (second division), to be played in Chennai on March 8, with the Indian Bank team. One match will be played tomorrow between Youngsters Club, Chandigarh, and Himalaya Tigers.

Mountain bike meet

The Chandigarh mountain bike championship for juniors and seniors will be organised in the forest area of Panjab University, said Mr Rakesh Mohindra, Secretary of the Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association. These off-road competitions will have cross-country and point-to-point massed races. Only mountain bikes made in India will be allowed. On the basis of this one day event, UT cyclists will be selected for National Mountain Bike Championship, to be held in Chandigarh from March 24 to 26. Entries close on March 10.

Coach to get foreign training

CHANDIGARH, March 3 — R.S. Kundu, wrestling coach of the Sports Authority of India, has been selected by the Union Government to attend an international wrestling coaching course to be held at Budapest in Hungary from March 15 to June 7. He is the only coach to be selected from the country for the course. His trainees have till date won 17 medals in various international meets, besides 160 medals in various national-level meets

DGP to hold darbar

PANCHKULA, March 3 — An open darbar to redress grievances of the police and of the public against the police will be organised by the Director-General of Police, Haryana, at the police headquarters in Sector 6 on March 7. Any public person or policeman who had appeared in the last darbar and his grievance was not attended to, can also appear at the darbar.
