Miss India Universe
PUNE, Jan 15 (PTI) — Lara Dutta was crowned the Femina Miss India Universe, while Priyanka Chopra and Diya Mirsa bagged Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific crowns, respectively, in the Femina Miss India Contest here today. Of the 26 contestants, 15 were shortlisted and five of them made it to the finals. Out of the 15, three were finally selected. The panel of judges included Shah Rukh Khan, Waheeda Rehman, Subhash Chandra, Juhi Chawla, Pritish Nandy, Marcus Swaraski, Caraline Hareira, Anjali Menon and cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin. Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, Diana Hyden and Yukta Mukhey were among those who attended the event.

Lankan killing
COLOMBO, Jan 15 (DPA) — Suspected Tamil rebels assassinated a chairman of a local council in northern Sri Lankan renewing their protest against government efforts to restore civil administration in the strife-torn region, political sources said today. Urban Council Chairman Vadivail Wijeratnam, was gunned down close to his office at Point Pedru.

Ocalan issue
ANKARA, Jan 15 (DPA) — Thousands of relatives of soldiers killed in clashes with the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) militants today took to the streets to protest a government decision to postpone the legal process to execute PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan. Rallies of so-called “martyrs relatives” gathered in Ankara, Antalya, Kayseri and Konya calling on the government to resign and for Ocalan to be hanged immediately, the Anadolu news agency reported.

  Serb warlord shot
BELGRADE, Jan 15 (Reuters) — Serb warlord Zeljko Raznatovic, known as Arkan, who was wanted by an international tribunal for alleged war crimes, was shot dead here today. Arkan, who was shot and seriously wounded in Intercontinental Hotel, died on the way to hospital.

NEW DELHI, Jan 15 (PTI) — The Election Commission has granted recognition to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha led by Shibu Soren and authorised it to use the bow and arrow symbol, setting at rest the leadership controversy.

ISI activities
CALCUTTA, Jan 15 (PTI) — The Army today said there had been a spurt in ISI activities in north Bengal where these agents were using the Siliguri corridor to foment trouble in northern parts of West Bengal and Assam.
