PUNJAB

BARNALA
Special drive:
Mr Ishwar Singh, SSP, stated here on Wednesday that a special drive against drug and liquor smugglers by the police had yielded encouraging results. He said the drive against antisocial elements had also been intensified.

Gherao: Residents of Jodhpur village gheraoed a raiding team of the Punjab State Electricity Board on Wednesday in a house for five hours. The villagers alleged that some PSEB officials were engaged in unfair means and this led to the incident.

GURDASPUR
"Handicap free" district:
The district will be "handicap free" within four years, according to Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy, Commissioner. He said a survey in this connection had been ordered and the first camp to provide limbs to the handicap would be held at Paniar in the middle of February.

JALANDHAR
Succumbed:
Jethu Ram of Bargaon in Maharashtra, who was injured after being hit by a train, succumbed to his injuries at the local Civil Hospital on Thursday. He was hit by the train while crossing a railway line.

KAPURTHALA
Mishap:
Joginder Singh, an employee of the rail coach factory, died on the spot in an accident on Thursday on the Kapurthala-Sultanpur Lodhi road. According to police reports, a military truck hit his cycle and crushed him. A case has been registered.

Effigy burnt: Students of DIET on Thursday took out a protest march in the town in support of their demands. They also burnt the effigy of Mr Tota Singh, Education Minister, at Court chowk.

Eye camp: The local Rotary Club will organise a free eye check-up camp at Rotary Bhavan on January 30, according to Dr Hari Singh, president of the club.

LUDHIANA
List approved:
The local unit of the Janata Dal (United) on Thursday announced a list of 46 office-bearers approved by the state President, Mr Jagir Singh Ganesh. The new list has a senior vice-president, five vice-presidents, six general secretaries, five secretaries, six joint secretaries, 17 executive members, four constituent Assembly unit members, a cashier and a press secretary.

MALERKOTLA
New dates:
The dates for the educational survey of children, aged 6-11 years and 11-14 years, have been changed in Sangrur district. According to sources, the survey would now be conducted from January 19 to 21 instead of January 14 to 16.

MOGA
Non-functional telephones:
Telephones of Puranewala village in the district have been out of order for quite some days. The department has never bothered to repair them although repeated complaints had been made, villagers alleged. They further said the Telecommunication Department had been sending inflated telephone bills.

Lahan seized: The Baghapurana police in the district on Thursday seized over 1 quintal lahan from the house of Jagir Singh of Budhsinghwala village. A case has been registered.

PATIALA
Yoga camp:
A 15-day yoga camp will be organised from January 17 on Punjabi University campus. Mr Muni Lal Kumra, yoga instructor, said in a press release issued here that yoga training would be given in the morning at hostel No. 7.

PATHANKOT
Eye check-up camp:
The Lions Club here organised a free eye check-up camp at Modern Sandeepni School in which 129 cataract operations were performed. Medicines and spectacles were given free of cost to the patients.

PHAGWARA
Theft:
A theft was committed on Thursday at Pandori village in which valuables worth Rs 19,500 were burgled. A case under Sections 457, 380, 148 and 149, IPC has been registered.

ROPAR
Eye bank:
The District Blindness Control Society will set up an eye bank at the district headquarters here. This was stated by Mr Gurinder Singh Grewal, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman of the society while presiding over a meeting of the society here on Thursday. The meeting was attended by Mr Khushi Ram, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Dr Rajinder Singh, Civil Surgeon, Mr Sukhdarshan Singh, secretary of the district Red Cross Society

AMBALA
Effigy burnt:
The Youth Congress, Haryana, burnt the effigy of Chief Executive of Pakistan, Gen Pervez Musharraf, here on Friday. The former vice-president of the Haryana Youth Congress, Mr Viresh Shandilya, on this occasion urged the Union Government to declare Pakistan as a terrorist state.

Opium seized: The police seized 880 gram of opium on Thursday night. One person, Inderjit, has been arrested in this regard.

FATEHABAD
Power supply:
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anil Malik, said the operation division of DHBVNL here had taken up steps for the improvement in power supply to the district. He stated that the work on the installation of the additional 12.5 mva, 132/11 kv power transformer at the substation here would be completed soon.

NARNAUL
Sentenced:
Mr R.S. Baswana, Additional Sessions Judge, here has sentenced Jitender Kumar of Ganiyar village to rigorous imprisonment for four years under Section 363, IPC, for kidnapping a woman. He will also pay a fine of Rs 500.

SIRSA
Power connections:
The Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) has released a total of 522 new electricity connections in the district of which 462 were for domestic purposes, 51 commercial, seven industrial, one each for public water works and bulk supply connection to a hospital. This was stated by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Amit Jha, here on Thursday.

Grant: Rupees 12.40 lakh were granted as financial assistance to the unemployed under the Prime Minister's Rojgar Yojna in the district during the last month. This was stated here by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Amit Jha, on Thursday. The District Industries Centre had received 124 applications for availing financial help under the yojna.

Unity move: A unity move in the Congress got a jolt on Thursday when supporters of ticket aspirants for the district raised slogans in favour of their leaders in front of the Congress observer.

SHAHABAD
Yatra:
A reception was given to the Brahma Kumaris "jyotirlingam rath yatra" at the Shiv Mandir dharamshala here on Thursday. The yatra had started from Kidar Nath.

Sweaters distributed: The local unit of the Bharat Vikas Parishad distributed sweaters, shoes and socks to poor schoolchildren here on Thursday, according to the President of the parishad, Prof. Sunil Gupta.

Body found: The police recovered the body of man at Rewli village on Thursday. According to the police, the body bore some injury marks. A case has been registered.

SONEPAT
Crop damaged:
Standing wheat crop in 10 acres was submerged following a breach in the Bichpari Minor near Gangesar village in Gohana subdivision on Thursday.

Arrest sought: Villagers of Guhna on Friday sent a memorandum to the state government demanding the immediate arrest of the culprit involved in the shooting of a two-and-a-half year-old boy, Rohit, of the village on December 20, 1999.

Suicide: Surjo, a 42-year-old woman, reportedly committed suicide by taking insecticide in her house at West Ram Nagar area here on Thursday. A domestic quarrel was stated to be the reason behind it.Top

HAMIRPUR
Development:
A sum of Rs 45 lakh has been spent on the construction of drains, footpaths, parks and streetlights in the town. This was stated by Mrs Anuradha Thakur, Deputy Commissioner here on Friday. The construction of a bridge over Hathli khud was also completed at a cost of Rs 4.08 lakh.

MANDI
Books gifted:
Books worth Rs 40,000 were gifted to the district library by the Deen Sahayak Trust here on Thursday. Earlier, these books were displayed at an exhibition.

UNA
Legal camp:
A legal literacy camp will be held here on Saturday. Mr J.N. Barowalia, District and Sessions Judge will preside. This was stated by the DPRO here.
