Campus beat
Arya nominated to PU Senate
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Sept 27 — Prof P.P Arya of the University Business School, Panjab University, has been nominated to the Panjab University Senate in his capacity as President of the Panjab University Teachers' Association (PUTA). His nomination has been done by the Chancellor, Mr Krishan Kant, Vice-President of India, in place of the outgoing PUTA President, Dr Satya Pal Gautam, as per previous practice.

In a recently held general body meeting of PUTA, it was pointed out that the seats meant for the constituencies of Haryana before they were frozen should be given to the teachers of Panjab University and also to the college teachers. The members were of the view that the strength of teachers in the campus had increased more than six-fold since the time four seats were allotted to them.

While expressing resentment on the neglect of university teachers in the Senate, they demanded that a minimum of four more seats should be given to the university teachers. They quoted from an agreement in 1978, whereby the university authorities and the representatives of Panjab University Teachers' Association had agreed to enhance the number of seats meant for the university teachers in the Senate to 18. They emphasised on the need for starting the process to fulfill that agreement by the year 2000, when the new Senate would be constituted.

Meanwhile, the former General Secretary of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) and Senator, Prof Charanjit Chawla, has stated that as per the regulation contained in the Panjab University calendar, eight seats in the Senate are reserved for the college lecturers and the university lecturers had no right over them. He said that college lecturers in Punjab would contest for these eight seats in the Senate, for at the time of reorganisation of Punjab in 1966, these eight seats were reserved for the college lecturers working in Punjab and Chandigarh. However, he was in favour of additional seats for the university teachers in the nominated quota. They should demand the nomination of at least two university teachers among the nominated members of the Senate.

Invited: Dr B.B Goel, Professor of Public Administration, Department of Correspondence Studies , Panjab University, has been invited to participate as a resource person by the National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad, in an "International Training Programme on Income Generating Activities for Rural Women: Identification, Planning and Implementation.'' Dr Goel has earlier been adviser to the Government of Mauritius for two years.

Seminar: With a view to promoting knowledge regarding international humanitarian law, which deals with war and arms conflict, a seminar is scheduled to be held in the month of October/November this year in collaboration with the Department of Laws, Panjab University. Mr Umesh Kadam, Regional Legal Adviser, Advisory Services on International Humanitarian Law, met Prof V.K Bansal, Chairman of the Department of Laws, in this connection recently.

The seminar will be attended by academicians, representatives of armed forces, international lawyers and former judges.Back

The serial is being directed by Dayal Nihlani, who has Hindi films like 'Gambler' and 'Insaaf' and tele-serials like 'Ek Kahani' to his credit. The producer of 'Lakeeran' is Ajay Goswami, who also stars in it. He has produced the music album of the serial 'Amanat'.

Most of the serial will be shot in and around Chandigarh and the cast includes a lot of talent from the city. The cast includes Mehar Mittal, Pankaj Beri, Kamal Tiwari, Vinod Sharma and Rimpy Gill. Local theatre person Gick Grewal is the costume designer.

"This is a high voltage drama which revolves around two brothers, one a village dweller and another a city lawyer," said Goswami. "The story of the serial is good, the actors are talented and the project is technically sound, so I do not think language will be a problem. This is not just another bubble-gum kind of serial, which caters only to the cosmopolitan crowd," said Nihlani. He will direct a project in Punjabi for the first time.

Talking to the media, Mehar Mittal, who called himself a 'fading star', commented on the subject of Punjabi films and serials and said, "Punjabis have the 'fire' in them to act and to take risks.

But the number of viewers has decreased while costs have gone up. But I believe that Punjabi language and Punjabi music will rule the screen for times to come."

The executive producer of 'Lakeeran' is Naresh Goswami. The cameraman is Shankar Vardhan, whose latest works include the serial 'Hasratein' and the film 'Insaaf'. The title song has been sung by Brijesh Ahuja.

Good response to farcical comedy
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Sept 27 — The CITI Entertainment Network staged the Hindi production of Russian playwright Anton Chekov's popular farcical comedy 'The Proposal' at Tagore Theatre yesterday evening. Directed by Shyam Juneja, who had earlier directed the Punjabi version of this same play in the late 80s, the play was a rip-roaring one-hour long affair.

The play was based on the original National School of Drama (NSD) script, in which the anxieties of a father worried about the prospects of his unmarried daughter and the disquieting strains of the middle-aged neighbour who wants to marry his daughter is brought out well.

The cast of the play had Shyam Juneja play the role of Makhan Lal, Arvinder Kaur as Sheela and Parvesh Sethi as Ram Lal.

This play of Chekov's has not only been seen very often on the stage, but has also been always enjoyable because of its subject matter which holds relevance even today. The concerns of the society over an unmarried daughter in the household and the taboo over broaching the subject of marriage are issues which are pertinent in our society even today.

And the hilarious way that these problems have been presented by Chekov is both clever and brilliant.

HUDA told to hand over plot
Tribune News Service

PANCHKULA, Sept 27 — The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered HUDA to hand over physical possession of the plot in Sonepat after development of the area, pay an interest of 15 per cent per annum, pay Rs 10,000 for mental agony and harassment and Rs 1,000 as cost of proceedings to Ms Sudershana Rani, a resident of Rampura Phul on account of delay in handling over the plot allotted to her.

The complainant had said that she was allotted a residential site in Sector 23 of Sonepat for approximately Rs 1,76,334. Even after depositing an additional Rs 25,772, she was not given possession of her plot allotted in 1991.

The forum bench comprising Mr R.C. Taneja and Mr B.S. Badhran observed that the plot was to be handed over to the complainant after completion of development works in the area within a reasonable period of time. However, this did not happen which amounts to deficiency of service on the part of HUDA.

Order on fountain: The District Consumer Redressal Forum has ordered Denizen Fountains, a company in Delhi, to either replace a fountain, pay Rs 1,500 towards mental agony and harassment and Rs 500 towards cost of proceedings or refund Rs 3,500 with interest of 12 per cent per annum from the date of receipt till actual realisation to Mr Sunil Gupta, a resident of Sector 16, Panchkula.

The order comes after the complainant alleged that he bought a water fountain for Rs 3,500 in 1998 from the company and was assured that it would not go out of order. However, immediately after installation, the fountain developed a snag which was brought to the notice of the company but to no avail.

Upon notice, the company did not appear and were accordingly proceeded against ex parte. A perusal of the file and documents shows that the company had organised an exhibition at Shivalik Hotel in Sector 17 in March, 1998. Since the company had failed to send its representative, the evidence produced by the complainant was upheld and the complaint accepted.Back
