Medical camp: The Bharat Vikas Parishad
organised a free medical camp for children at an
eye hospital here on Friday. A large number of
children of the area were examined.
HOSHIARPUR
Apprehension: Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, Deputy
Commissioner-cum-District Returning Officer of
the Hoshiarpur parliamentary constituency, said
here on Monday that some of the contesting
candidates were apprehensive about the changing
of ballot boxes by the ruling party from the
counting centres. He said he had written to the
Chief Election Commissioner, Punjab, to deploy
additional companies of paramilitary forces at
the places where the ballot boxes had been kept.
JALANDHAR
Robbery: A school teacher Sangeeta
Chawla was allegedly deprived of her ornaments
besides a purse containing Rs 500 by two armed
scooter-borne youth near Jandusingha level
crossing on Saturday. The incident occurred while
she was returning from her school at Jaitowali
village. The Adampur police has registered a
case.
Seminar:
The Rotary Club (Jalandhar Central) organised a
seminar on "Art and Living" here on
Sunday. Dr H.J. Singh, President of the club,
said the club would hold a free anti-TB camp at
Bada Gurdwara, Basti Saikh on September 26 and
would adopt TB patients. Dr D.R.Vij, Dean,
Colleges Punjabi University also spoke on the
occasion.

Trees destroyed: A large number of trees
belonging to the Forest Department were reduced
to ashes in Langeana Nawan, Langeana Purana and
Nathuwal villages, according to reports here on
Saturday. The cause of the fire could not be
ascertained.
Power supply:
The uninterrupted power supply which continued
during the Lok Sabha elections in the Faridkot
parliamentary constituency allegedly on
directions of the Chief Minister, Parkash Singh
Badal, has ended after the elections. On Sunday
the power supply was disrupted for about
four-and-a-half hours there.
Urged: The
panchayat of Thraj village under Baghapurana
police station in the district urged the state
government on Monday to provide adequate
financial assistance to the father of Sepoy
Chamkaur Singh, (number 3394028) of the Sikh
Regiment. He was killed in a jeep accident last
month while on leave.

Meeting: The SSP, Mr Rajpal Meena, while
addressing representatives of political, social
and trade organisation on Saturday said a proper
rapport between the police and public would be
developed to nab the anti-social elements. Mr
Meena, who has taken charge of the district few
days ago convened this meeting at Kamal Palace to
acquaint himself with the problems, grievances
and expectations of the people.

Kand: The local unit of Shri Ramsharnam
organised a religious function at Ramsharnam
Bhavan on Sunday. It was attended by nearly 600
devotees who performed pooran ahuti of the
10-week-long Sunder Kand path. They also prayed
for peace in the Kargil sector. According to Dr
Jatinder Dev, a sum of Rs 11,000 had already been
sent for the welfare of the armed forces.

Protest: The Food Corporation of India
Employees Union has decided to launch an
agitation from October 21 to protest against the
alleged casual attitude adopted by the F.C.I. top
brass towards their demands. The Vice-President
of the union Mr S.P. Sood, while releasing the
proceedings of a regional conference of the
Punjab FCI employees held at Ludhiana, on Sunday,
said the conference had supported the decision of
the core committee of the union to revive the
countrywide agitation which was deferred on March
15.

Paddy purchase: The Punjab Food and
Supplies Minister, Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, has
instructed all Deputy Commissioners, officials of
the Mandi Board and the Punjab State Electricity
Board and all government procuring agencies to
make arrangements for the purchase of paddy
before September 15. Mr Mittal said he had
summoned a meeting of all government procuring
agencies on Tuesday at Chandigarh.

Development Week: The local branch of
the Bharat Vikas Parishad on Sunday launched
"vikas saptah" (development week),
according to Mr B.D. Sharma, a senior parishad
functionary. The week will be marked by various
social, educational, religious and welfare
projects.

Noted Punjabi writer Devinder Singh Sra was
honoured by the Punjabi Lekhak Sabha of Palahi
and Phagwara here on Friday. The Municipal
Councillor, Mr Malkiat Singhh Ragbotra, presented
him with a shawl, a memento and scroll.

Demanded: A meeting of the Class IV
Government Employees Union, Punjab, was held here
on Sunday under the presidentship of Thakur Hari
Singh, President of the union. He demanded the
immediate release of the Anomaly Committee report
regarding their pay-scales and allowances. The
union also demanded the grant of DA at par with
the Central Government employees.
