Advantages of minkey
By Arvind Katyal

CHANDIGARH, Sept 13 — ''Mini hockey or minkey is an integral part of the sports curriculum in primary schools of Australia and it has gradually helped in making good hockey players,'' said Nadine Richards, Development Manager working with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in Hockey, based at Canberra.

She was here today on an invitation of the Active Sport (India), a body promoted by Mr Kuldip Singh, with its headquarters at Patiala.

Nadine today gave training to physical education teachers and students of St Stephen's School, Sector 45, at a one-day clinic hosted by SD Public School, Sector 32. The Australian coach-cum-umpire was accompanied by her colleague, B. Nixon. Both were excited after seeing the response of the teachers and students.

Mr L.V. Sehgal, Principal of the school, was all praise for these enthusiastic hockey experts from Australia. He also praised the Australian Sport Commssion which seemed to have done a good deal of research in basics of sports. He said if these concepts were implemented in Indian schools, it would be of imense help.

Minkey is mini hockey meant for childern mainly from primary schools, in small age groups. As a project of the Australian Sport Commission has proved, this helps in gradual development of a player by creating inquisitiveness in him.

Last year, Judy Myers and Philips of the Australian Sport Commission had given lecture and practical demonstration of this modified sport at St John's High School, Sector 26.

Nadine who is a coach-cum-umpire, said in her country, a normal child played six-a-side minkey. Then he played at the junior level in a seven-a-side team and later in a full-strength team at the senior level.

The advantage of minkey is that it is played in a quarter of a normal hockey ground and at the junior level, in half of the field. In minkey, a budding player has a better chance of interacting with the ball, helping him get more exposure.

Nadine said it was not necessary to play minkey on the synthetic surface. In India, we could play it on the concrete surface such as the basketball court, as there were not many Astroturfs available here.

She added that basically, physical development of a child was a must for playing the game. That is why for India, the australial sports body had chosen this game which would be introduced from Class III to Class IV onwards.

"In Australia, this game was introduced about ten years ago and now we are getting wonderful results," said Nadine. She will also attend a clinic at Delhi day after tomorrow.

She said in Australia, childern played minkey mainly on Saturdays and it was not necessary that they should play only one game. Continuing to play for many games utilised their energies to an optimum potential.

She had also organised the Australian Women's Hockey Championship for players under the age of 18 as the Tournament Director. She also acted as umpire at the Australian Women's Hockey National Indoor Championship.

She was happy with the spirit and physical aptitude of the city's children. She hoped India would develop the primary skills for moulding young players into healthy and fit individuals.

The schools whose teachers took part in the today's clinic were, Vivek High School, Sector 38; St Kabir, Sector 26, Shivalik Public School, Sector 41; KVM, Ludhiana; BVM, Ludhiana; St John's, Sector 26, SD Public School, Sector 32.Back
